This is now worrying me! I am set to get married in September and thought for sure we would make it legal. My fiancé has good insurance and we are pretty well off right now. But he also wants to eventually quit his job (sooner rather than later) and go into business by himself or with one other person (in a hedge fund). He would buy insurance the. But could I even get on it?
<br />
<br />Can we not get legally married if he wants to quit his job? <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-sad.gif" border="0">

Ok, I'm confused. Im engaged, and I have been SERIOUSLY worried about this for a while. To the people who are not married, are you living off disability, or social security or what? How do you pay for everything if you're not working? Seriously, I dont get this.

I am on disability/medicaid and at this point in my health can not afford to lose that. If we got legally married, my "wife" would make to much money and I would lose the medicaid. Even though she makes too much for me to keep my medicaid, it is no where near enough to pay for everything even if I was on her insurance, which is not that great, and other stuff along with mortgage and all the other bills we have. Another thing is that I was approved by medicaid years ago that they would cover my double lung transplant. I have since gotten better but I still have the approval from them that they will pay for the transplant. If I was to lose my medicaid, then we would have to added expense of having to figure out how to pay for a transplant when the time came for that. Which I hope is still years away.

Now I am freaking out! I quit my job and am on COBRA now until I get married and go on his insurance. Should I be applying for disability instead and not get legally married? if he wants to eventually go into business for himself what happens to me?

I'm married, and I carry health insurance for both of us through my employer. Even before I started carrying insurance through my employer I was on Medicaid. Medicaid is now my secondary insurance. I pay maybe $20/month out of pocket. I was told by the Medicaid office a few years ago that my husband's income would not be taken into account when determining my eligibility to stay with the program. I am the breadwinner of my house.
Like others have said, he is going to have to have a job with benefits. Or you are going to have to have a job with benefits. Or you are both going to have to have jobs with benefits. Preferably careers if it's possible. I am unaware of your age or health situation (other than the obvious), but have either of you gone to college? It is very important for us to remember that we have to try and plan the best we can with what we have!
