How long did you wait to have the 2nd? I got pg with Hannah when Alexa was 21 months old. My girls are 2.5 years aprt

Probably obvious-but was it a hard decision? I knew I wanted a sibling for Alexa. It took over a year after having Alexa for it to happen but when I blew PFT's higher than I blew before getting pg with Alexa I knew it was time to try for #2. With all of that said, it was still I really hard decision but at the same time it felt right.

With the first pregnancy, did your pfts drop afterwards? Yes. I was hanging out right around 80% before getting pg. My PFT's dropped through the pregnancy. I did PFT's just a week after giving birth and I blew 50%. Mind you I had just given birt, had a daughter in the NICU and was EXHAUSTED. I was able to get my PFT's back up. About a year or so after giving birth I blew 87% and that was when we really started TTC #2.

With the 2nd pregnancy, did your pfts drop even lower afterwards? My PFT's did not drop as low with the second pregnancy. I started at about 85% and blew 60% near the end. Hannah just turned 1 year old and I just blew back at baseline of 80%. This year has been hard! Two PICC's (first time for CF related IV's in 19 years) and a lot of oral antibiotics. I have been feeling yucky and blowing around 60%, take meds and will blow around 75%. A few weeks after the end of the meds I am back to feeling yucky and blowing lower numbers. Just two weeks ago my PFT's were back to pre pg levels of 80%. This week I caught a cold (daughter in preschool) and I am trying my very best to keep it from heading to my lungs.

How big of a factor were your pfts in making the decision to have a 2nd child? Huge! Seeing my PFT's return to baseline and go even higher was what told me to go for it. I figured if another baby was in our future that was the best time, when my PFT's were high and I was feeling great.

Do you think its the pregnancy or the lifestyle of parenting that has had the biggest influence on your lungs? Without a doubt, parenting! There is just so little time for Mommy to take care of herself. I am really very good about taking my nebs but I need more exercise and that is very hard to fit in these days. I need sleep so I tend to sleep until the girls wake up in the a.m. By the time they are in bed I am feeling too tired to work out even though we have a tredmill here at our house.

I could write a lot more but I need to get a snack and get myself to bed! In fact I think at one point I was writing you an email about this. My old computer died so I do not have access to old e-mails I was working on. If I owed you an e-mail, I am sorry you never got it!

I wanted to add that I found 2.5 years between the girls to be REALLY DIFFICULT. Alexa still needed so much from me. She was jealous and started to throw temper tantrums. Even with making sure she got good amounts of one on one time with each parents she really struggled with the changes. We made it through and now Alexa and Hannah play so nice together (most of the time) but it was a rough road to get here. Aside for CF stuff. They past year has mentally exhausted me! Of course I would not change anything about the timing of each pregnancy because I am beyond blessed to have what I have!

Sorry I didn't respond earlier Christian -
My PFTs before each pregnancy were in the upper 60s. My clinic has since changed the formula for the PFTs and now they're in the lower 60s/upper 50s (same actual #s as far as liters, etc but different calculations).

What actually made us decide to have #1 when we did was that my PFTs had been slowly declining and were dipping into the 50s. So we decided that if we wanted kids we should do it. So I joined a gym to get healthier (my work out partner was a friend who had a tx and was a work out fanatic so that helped!) and we started to TTC. By the time I got pg I was in the upper 60s/lower 70s.

When it was time to TTC #2 they had been down because of the stress of graduate school. But I took a leave and got rid of a lot of stress and they went back up (along w/ starting hypertonic saline) and they were in the 60s again.

For each TTC effort my doctors were behind us.

I just wanted to let you know that 9 1/2 weeks after delivering, my FEV1 is 1% higher than pre-pregnancy, even though I'd dropped so low (down to 49%) during pregnancy. You can gain it back! I think that beginning to exercise and adding a 3rd vest time really helped!

By the way, I think 4 years between my babies was perfect. Chris isn't jealous at all and I think that's because he's so much more independent and very helpful!
