More Enzymes

Sam keeps needing more and more enyzmes. Every month, he adds a pill. Right now, he has to have three spoonfuls of applesauce to get them all. He is taking 4 Pancreabcarb-4 with each feeding, and he is at four months. Is this normal? Of course, he is 16 pounds, and growing well. How many enzymes are too many? And if he has to take more and more with each meal, how will we afford them after he goes off the first three years free program? I asked these questions at the clinic, but didn't quite get a clear answer. The NP told me it was because his pancreas wasn't working, and the doctor told me he was actually on a low dosage for a child his size.

It is a really high dose, but I too checked with the nutritionist and she reassured me that it would have to be an EXTREMELY high amount for the enzymes to cause and problems. I know exactly how you feel because I was worried too, but he seems to be doing okay with it, and is down to about one or two poops a day...

I hope your little Sam has a wonderful holiday, and good question - I have been there too!

It is a really high dose, but I too checked with the nutritionist and she reassured me that it would have to be an EXTREMELY high amount for the enzymes to cause and problems. I know exactly how you feel because I was worried too, but he seems to be doing okay with it, and is down to about one or two poops a day...

Enzyme are so unlike any other pill we've every taken or given our children. I know it sounds outrageous, but if he's gaining and doing well and your doctor is prescribing it, go with it. Enzymes are pretty benign. In fact some over the counter and health care stores have similar (but not the same) ingredients....Beano is one.

As for the cost, we got free enzymes until my daughter's third birthday. She's approaching her fourth birthday, and we still have bottles left from the program. They are going to expire before we use them all. Regardless, when we've had to fill the script for enzymes, its been the lowest tier co-pay for us, even with it being 500 pills a month.

Most of the pharmaceutical companies have programs for enzymes. You can get free vitamins or free nutritional drinks when you fill your enzyme script. I think I heard that with the new labeling laws, the companies are going to have to pull the "free" drugs programs and will have to either give "rebates" or focus more on the free non-script items.

While it may seem like a lot as long as the Lipase numbers (I THINK it's 7 am I'm sorry trying to pull from memory before my first cup of coffee lol) stay below a certain point they are good.
