How many of you take it daily and at what dose? How much has it helped with your FEV1?

I am currently recovering from pneumonia, on top of everthing else, and was thinking of asking my doctor about trying it because I have lost so much lung function in 12 weeks...My FEV1 went from 64% to 49%. I'm currently on 3 IVs for 6 hours a day. My doctor isn't overly concerned due to everything that I have been through. He feels I will get it all back; however, I just want my life back!!!

I was only off IVs for 1.5 weeks!!!

Good Morning To Jenny,

I take the 1200mg twice a day. Well hydrated and use HTS in neb. I do not know how much it has helped my FEV1, however it does help getting the mucus up. Feel sure that it has helped my FEV1 because I can do more and less winded. Am able to do a 15 min. mile with a grade of 4 on treadmill with FEV1 of 40, the lowest it has been was 28. In my opinion exercise is a very important part in fighting CF. I have been off IV med. for at least 4 yrs. now. Prevention is what I try to practice.
Good luck to you young lady!

I take an off-brand of OTC gauifenisen -- the same medicine in mucinex, but without the dyes and time release stuff. I usually take half a pill these days which is about 200mg. I began taking gauifenisen with a prescription a few years ago. I had made two attempts to get off steroids that landed me back on antibiotics. A friend with asthma suggested gauifenisen to me and I asked my doctor for a prescription. It helped me finally get off the steroids without ending up in the ER again. I was probably taking 1200mg at that time.

I don't know what my FEV1 is. But, the last time I ran out of it and didn't get more quickly enough, I ended up leaving work early. This is the only maintenance drug I still take. I don't take much but I clearly still need it.

My boys take it twice a day and have for three years. They bounced back so well after fighting the mycobacteria, we were afraid to stop it.

Recently we talked about trying the generic but it is not time released like mucinex so you have to take it every four hours. Mucinex is more expensive but more convenient.
