As of October 2008, they will no longer pay for medical mistakes and conditions patients acquire in hospitals, like infections.

Instead, the hospitals will have to pick up those costs.

Sounds like the hospitals will have to be very sanitary!

We go to Fairview University in Minneapolis. When were in the hospital my son gets 4 treatments a day. They use one cup for albuterol/mucomist and one for any other thing he may be on, per day. They change it every morning. I would chnage it everyday. If they won't, then throw it away at the end of the day so they have to LOL

Jeanne, it is interesting that you mention this. My ENT and I had a discussion about this very thing the last time I was in for a trach change. Nosocomial infections won't be covered by Medicare (UTI's from foley catheters, sepsis from a central line etc). Hospitals will have to be more careful.
I really don't understand why some hospitals have such stringent quotas for neb cups. I buy them for myself, each set costs me a buck and a half. A buck and a half...that's it. Medicare is just as ridiculous about their limits...just 2 a MONTH for home. That is unrealistic as I use up to 4 different nebs a day and toss them every week....You would think that the nebs were made of gold the way they are regulated sometimes.

You need to be insistent about getting clean, sterile neb cups. They tried to do that to us at Fairview as well - it didn't work. I told them "You will bring enough neb cups to switch out at each therapy. I am not paying you to reinfect his lungs with the bacteria he's coughing out."

J is lucky to have such a confrontational wife.
