As for needles: your child should NEVER have to feel the pain of a needle. You can demand that they use EMLA or LMX (both are lidocaine creams 2.5% or 4% respectively) before any needle sticks.

It takes about 20 minutes, and they won't feel anything. Can't do much for past trauma, but by school age if you can show them it won't hurt, it should help. We won't let any of our kids get any bloodwork or even regular shots w/o LMX.

We use it to access our 7yr old's port 2x/week and he can't feel it so I know it works.

As for other treatment/phobia, I'm not sure what to tell you. We have 2 sons that have been traumatized by medical treatment before our home; one has improved but it took time, the other has only been home a few months and we are still trying.

If my wife finds this she may have some other ideas....

Wow that is hard. My son who is 22 hates needles needs a colonoscopy won't do it. Yet my 15 yr old daughter had her first one at age 12 and needles don't bother her at all. Infact she likes watching when ever they do anything to her. She will ask can she pull what ever tube is in her out J-tube. I think people just view pain differently. You can stick me all day long I could care less. My son passes out on blood. I think Tonya is right some can just go with the flow and some can't. You are between a rock and ahard place because of his age. But at the same time the doctors can tell alot about what is going on with your blood. I wish you all the luck in the world on this one.

I think Tom's idea is a very good one, Stacey. I used to use that when I had a port and I never felt a thing. Do you think Jordan would consider that? I'd put it on about 30 min. ahead.

Other than slipping something into his food to calm him <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif" border="0"> I can't think of any other ideas. Let us know how it goes.

I can completely understand you son's fears. That's all we CFers ever see is needles and if the tech doesn't do it right and fishes for the vein, it is very painful! I had a fear of needles until I was about 10 and then for some reason just got over it. I think that in my mind I realized that this was going to be something that was going to happen no matter what and I somehow just let it go.

I agree with Tom to try the EMLA cream. It does wonders. I used it all the time when I had to have my port accessed (which without cream is a LOT more painful than a blood draw) and I felt absolutely nothing other than a little pressure. For my port, I had to leave it on for about 45 mins but I would think with a blood draw it could be on for a shorter amount of time.

I hope that you can get him over this fear. Having needle sticks will be an ongoing thing all throughout his life! Even after the Tx, I have had my blood drawn for levels every 2 weeks! I get to go down to once a month now though....I am so relieved.
