Maybe if he talks to people that have CF and they tell them their experience it could help? I know when I was a young adult I talked with a CF'r that was on his way to college and he wanted to know how I got through it etc. He said he felt so much better about it after talking to me.

It is hard to make teens do stuff..... I would be willing to talk to him if that would help about my experience with being diligent with my care.. For what it is worth you can PM me?

Stay strong...Unfortunately,sometimes kids have to learn the hard way and I know when it pertains to their health it has got to be sooooo hard for a parent to sit by and watch bad decisions.

I was always terrified of needles. Whenever I had a doctors appointment i would be sick worrying for days beforehand. when i was diagnosed with cfrd at 13 it wasn't as bad as i thought. i realised then i wasn't afraid of needles as such, i didn't mind injecting my stomach my fear was a needle going into a vein. I have only gotten over my fear in the last couple of years. I had a DVT and had to take warfarin to prevent further clots. when i was on warfarin i needed weekly blood tests and i got so used to the blood tests that one day i just realised that i hadn't been thinking about it at all and that it didn't hurt.
My one piece of advice though is....if you are getting a blood test and who ever is doing it doesn't get a vein first time ask for someone else to try. there is nothing worse than someone poking and prodding you over and over. if they don't get a vein first time you lose faith in them and get scared. and next time you are going for tests you'll dread it.

The only thing I have to add is that we have found generic EMLA which is %5 Lidocaine (stronger) and put it on generously at least an hour before the stick. One painless stick goes a long way towards calming anxiety!
Good luck!

Your son sounds just like me. It's not so much the pain from the needle as it is the needle being in my vein/arm. It really grosses me out. I also can't watch anybody on television or in person getting a shot. If I have to have blood draws, my husband usually goes with me so I can hold his hand. The nurses probably think I am the biggest baby in the world. I really get worked up.

Unfortunatley, I don't really have any advise for you as I still have this problem myself. I have talked to the dr. about it several times and he suggested maybe seeing a counselor or therapist. I just don't see how that would help me.

I haven't been in the hospital in over 20 years. Partly because of my fear, I don't want IV antibiotics. I always opt for the orals, but the last couple of exacerbations that I have had, the dr. would have preferred I go in. There is absolutely no way I could do a PICC line. My problem also is that it's not just needles. I would be a nervous wreck if I had to have any major procedure done. Luckily, so far, I haven't had to.

I did mention this to the counselor at the clinic and she said she could work with me to try and help me get rid of the fear. Maybe he could talk to the counselor at his clinic (if one is available). I totally sympathize with him. Let us know if you find something that helps him.
