Need to whine

Ok, so we have been doing the Nebs for two weeks now and all but 4 of the treatments have been miserable.

Abby screams, cries, wales, pitches fits the moment she hears the neb machine turn on. We've tried with the mask, without the mask (against direct orders from the clinic), sitting, standing, watching TV (or attempting to), listening to music, sitting in the floor, the chair, the pillows, on top of the big stuffed dog, etc. etc. etc.

We have tried doing the treatments while she is sleeping (nebs are what are the problem) and we wait until we know that she is deep asleep. She hears the nebulizer turn on and WHAM, we have a screaming child. I'm at my wits end.

Please tell me this gets better or help me figure out some additional things I can do to help my child adjust to these treatments. Abby's 15.5 months.

Maybe you could get a noise machine for the room you do her treatments in. Then she wouldn't be able to hear the neb machine??

We used to put a pillow over the neb compressor so it wouldn't wake Alyssa. It quiets it quite a bit, but I'm not sure its the best idea. LOL -- but whatever works. We had this problem for awhile too, but wound up asking if we could switch to an inhaler instead of the neb. Since Alyssa only takes albuterol, they happily switched us. I know that eventually we'll add other meds and have to reintroduce the neb, but its been nice to have more med go into her than into my family room. Is this a possibility for you guys?

It gets better! Really!!!!! Em still has her bad days, mostly when s he's in a mood to wiggle and dance and the neb hose won't let her, but at 2, she's usually pretty good about it. I remember the not too distant past when it has HORRIBLE for both of us, though. Can you get her a little chair that she can sit in, something special? We have a hideous SpongeBob chair that did the trick for about a month. Then i t was the Mickey Mouse ride-on airplane. Now, what works best i s a LaurieBerkner video, turned up really loud, and Emily INSISTS on holding the neb cup herself. I make sure it's in the right place, of course, but she pretty much does the night treatment herself! (She lets Daddy do the morning one.)

Hang in there. I know how aweful it is to have to force her to do it. But you have to. We have always told Emily (even before she could understand) that she doesn't get to argue about her PT. Mostly, she seems to get it, now. Good luck!
