From a patient's point of view it doesn't seem like a bad thing.</end quote></div>

I am conflicted because of being in the high risk category as a patient, but also know what its like to be mandated to do things in the healthcare profession that could one at risk themselves.

Living in NYS nothing surprises me accept maybe the fact they haven't figured out a way to put a tax on the shot. I can understand them promoting shots but not forcing. The worse case of flu I ever had was after the flu shot I received. I was down for 2 weeks so I choose not to get flu shot, my daughter with CF who resides with us does as well as her son. No one to date has gotten flu lately in our house just me back when I did the shot. The H1N1 I am very leary of they rushed it to market and I saw one show where a doctor said he would not get shot nor his children and also mentioned one of the ingriedients may be tied to causing autusim. And if they are releasing the drug manufacturer from liability that tells me someone thinks there will be side effects.

So there would seem to be two issues here...

1. they don't want a situation where masses of health-care workers are calling in sick with the flu and

2. they don't want health-care workers exposing high-risk patients to the flu.

I have a question- will vaccinating them necessarily prevent them from transmitting the flu to others if they are exposed to other sick people? Someone who has immunity to a virus (due to actually having had it, or due to vaccination) already has their antibodies to keep them from getting sick... but can they still expose others? I honestly have no idea but now am wondering.

I don't like the idea of forcing it. I think it's appropriate to expect higher-risk patients to be cared for by staff that has (voluntarily) been vaccinated. Better protocol throughout a hospital environment to avoid germ transmission (masking, gowning, gloves, etc) like they do at clinic would help. For example, they expect patients in the ER to wear masks now; staff should as well given how many people they are exposed to day in and day out and how many people they have the capacity to infect if they are carrying a bug (flu or not).

To clarify a point in the post above mine: the shot component commonly linked to autism is thimerosal. They are making a version of the h1n1 shot that is thimerosal-free.
