Nose + Boogers

This is the most common recipe I've seen when I've done an internet search for homemade recipes for sinus irrigation solutions:

1 pint water

1 heaping tsp of canning salt

1?2 tsp of baking soda

I don't use baking soda in mine though- for some reason, it's irritating to my skin (???).

And I use filtered, boiled water with mine, and add the salt while it is still hot, so it dissolves quickly and well. Store it in a glass container in the 'fridge, and (again, from what I've read the most) use it within a week. Hope that helps .

Here is the video I watched to show me how to do it. <a target=_blank class=ftalternatingbarlinklarge href="http://youtube.com/watch?v=uzK9Gn4E_Eg

The most important things to get out of that video are head postion, the fact you keep your mouth open, and you DON'T suck in to your nose. Basically you want to slowly and gently fill one side with water, then it has nowhere to go but out the other side. I'm not sure how you'd do that with a 'home' kit. Do you have a really big syringe? I guess if that made a seal you could push in the water really slowly.

As for preparing the water, the easiest way to sterilize it is just use a really big mug, stir in your salt and baking soda (make sure to use non-iodized salt, look for canning salt or sea salt), then microwave it for a minute or two til it boils. Then set the mug out to let it cool for maybe 15-20 minutes til its just lukewarm.

Here's another video but this one is just for fun... don't try this at home! http://youtube.com/watch?v=aQm7YpxgOnA (incidentally that guy makes some funny comics at toothpastefordinner.com)

I use Sodium Chloride solution w/ a 50 cc syringe. I have been doing this for many years now and it is the best thing i can do to help myself w/ all the sinus issues i have.. So i shoot the solution up the nostril, not to hard, then the other nostril and after i do i tilt my head to either side to get the water out.. I also blow my nose after irrigations and continue w/ my Veramyst... Any other ?s just pm me... joni
