Of course George paid the price for something that could have been prevented, and So did that child!

My statement stands, dogs are hardwired to be dogs, and have the potential to bite, they have teeth and only ignorant people will profess that their dog will never bite!

May sound harsh to some, but it is true

George was a 5 and a half year old lab who had never bitten before....Question posed is who was at fault?

George The dog, not likely
The toddler, most probably by doing something that resulted in the bite
The owners, definitely dogs and kids should never be left unsupervised, as tragic as it is, this case as with many others could have been prevented....by supervision and not not having the attitude that my dog would never bite!!!

I know of two seperate cases, one was of a 6 year old Golden retriever who bit the family's 18 month old child, the child received 30 stitches to the face and the dog received a nice one way ticket to the ground, after the vet had put the dog to sleep they found a pencil had been rammed into the dogs ear penetrating the eardrum.....

another case was of a family rottie about 4 year old, again an unproved attack on a 2 year old, kid received stitches the dog received death penalty, once the dog was dead the vet pulled out 28 staples from the dogs ear....It had withstood 27 staples to the ear but the 28th was the breaking point....

No idea what a 'halti' is, we use a choke chain on our dog, she is a good walker and does not pull. Used correctly, a choke chain makes a noise that stops the dog, rather than choke the dog. Anyway I used to have 2 cocker spaniels and had them out together one summers day. I had extending leads on them, maybe 20 yards long, they made a bolt for a busy road, the thing is they had crossed over behind me then ran past me, I had shorts on and as I kept hold of the leads the leads went right across the back of my knees giving me severe rope burns and I also ended up on my Ar$e. Should I have let go of the leads to begin with? wish I had.

ahh tracy, thats it! i feel so silly when i refer to you as freak [mostly because you arent a freak!] rofl. they were fitted by professional trainers [northern suburbs training and obedience perth]. you know how when a dog pulls on a halti it steers it head around to the side? my dogs head doesnt turn. she resists it. more resistance = tighter the halti gets. the tightness is with the original halti though. with the gentle leader, although the problem of her mouth tying shut was solved, she resisted that so much more than the original halti. she got a better 'footing' [or snouting in this case haha] to push off of, most likely because gentle leaders sit closer to the head. its like if you put a regular harness on a puller, they learn to use the harness to pull even more. except in my dogs case she learnt to use the haltis to pull more instead.

never say never julie. the first step in protecting your dog is to realise that no dog is 'bulletproof'. dogs wont love you any less if you admit that you dont trust them 100%. no one will think you are a bad owner either.

I am the owner of a small dog. A VERY small dog, 4 pounds. And I would be scared out of my mind if I saw 2 big dogs running into my yard. Just getting stepped on could hurt my dog. So I would not be happy to have 2 big dogs after my little dog. That being said, knowing the size of my dog, I DO NOT let her go outside by herself (dogs, cats, hawks, etc). I feel it is my responsibility to watch out for her.
I do think the other woman did go nuts over this and over-reacted. I'm sure she was just scared at the time and didn't really think things thru before calling the police (like letting her KID sit outside by its self).
If I were you, I'd suck it up and pay the ticket. You just have to realize what it worth it in the long run. A big lesson was learned here and I think you'd rather spend time with your 3 kids and husband than fight this. Don't waste your energy on something that isn't going to be important in the long run.
Some of it is unfair, some of it is not (since you did let go). I would not let this other woman take time away from my family just because she is stupid.
This is my 2 cents, but I thought I'd share since I have a small dog.

sorry, julie but this is a criminal matter, minor misdemeanor i'm sure, but still criminal, traffic tickets are to, and if u fight those in court and lose u will also be given court fines, trust me, i was a cop for 13 years.....

and I agree w/ freak, so many people think their dogs would "NEVER" hurt anyone. I've personally seen a few Georges's in my lifes. Yes dogs are dogs.
