So I have been suffering from cronic pain for a while now because of my constant cough and my bone deterioration and it's starting to get to a place where it is hard to function cause I am in constant physical pain!!! My doctor won't put me on opiates cause they lower your respiratory rate plus there addictive and I can't take any type of ibprophan cause it causes the lung vessels in the lungs to weaken and bleed. So he just tells me to take Tylonol. I take it all day every day, like candy practically, every 8 hours on the dot but it doesn't really work any more, hell at this point I am just taking it as a plasibo. The last time I was in the hospital they gave me diloted IV which definitely helped me alot but my doctor says he won't give it to me again this time cause it made me too groggy, but I don't really care, cause I'm in so much pain!!!!! The thought of having to lie in the hospital for at least 2 weeks in constant pain makes me not even want to go back in, and I desperately need to go back in to gain some weight. What should I do?? What does everyone else do for their pain control??? Please please please, I'm so sick of being in pain.

I dont know how old you are & although the doctor has valid concerns......your pain shouldnt be dismissed so easily.

Eating tylenol like its candy isnt any better for you then the other meds that you cant have. Tylenol can take its toll on your liver.

Unless you have an addiction issue of some sort that makes the doctor not believe you then you need to make the doctor listen.

Find another doctor that specializes in pain management.

Pain will slow your recovery process just as much as the possible affects of any meds.

I tolerate a lot of pain, but when I finally couldnt handle it anymore I was given percocet & vicodin (sp?). It actually didnt make the pain go away, but it got me through the day even if it was with sleep.

Prednisone also helped with pain, but being a steroid its brings its own set of problems.

Good Luck!

My doctors are using muscle relaxers versus pain killers for my pain, and it seems to be helping most of the time. And I don't get as drowsy as I did on pain killers.

I agree with Melissa, while there are certain drawbacks of being on opiates, these have to outweigh the benefits of pain management. In your case I think you are getting to the point that your pain is becoming more debilitating than the potential effects of narcotic use.

Your CF team should not be trying to manage chronic pain, even if it is secondary to CF. Go find a pain management specialist.

Some of the "nicer" meds on the market are Tramadol (schedule V) and Toradol. Toradol is an extremely effective anti inflammatory, but it can only be used for 5 consecutive days, as it is hard on your kidneys.

Good luck to you.
