Pancrease sufficient vs. not....?

I didn't start taking enzymes into my mid-20's. I had to start because my protein levels were low due to my not absorbing correctly.

My mother always had me on a low fat diet and that's why I think I didn't need enzymes. I still eat low-fat to this day--I rather control things naturally and take less pills. I never had a problem with weight either. Even now, I am a healthy 140 lbs at 5'4" tall.

I take Ultrase MT20--2 with meals. Sometimes I will forget to put some in my purse and I still do okay when I eat without them.

I don't know how much pancreatic sufficiency correlates with lung function. I think it is more the case of good nutrition and having good BMI (body mass index) that is connected with respiratory health.

Nicole hit the nail on the head - everyone is so different.... but - there is medical evidence out there about BMI and increased lung function, so yes, generally speaking it's better to be PS -- and at least it's one less thing to worry about!

Thanks everyone for the fast responses! I think it so hard to get used to the idea that there are no 'absolutes' with CF. It really impacts everyone so diffrently.

Thanks for sharing your insights!

Hello LKM

My boyfriend is 35 and has just been diagnosed this year. He is pancreatic sufficient, as most people who are diagnosed at older ages. He has some some bronchiectasies but normal lung funtion (fev in his 90´). He doesn´t have pseudomonas yet. I think is better to be PS, usually it means better nutrition, and a better prognosis (although not always).
Rita.
