PFT's

Is there any CFF protocol regarding the full blown air tight booth type pft because it's been years since I've done this. I thought maybe it was ruled unsanitary or not necessary due to technical upgrades or something. They seem to get all the numbers from my quarterly pft'ing at the computer with just the simple test - breath in, hard blow, hard breath in.

those of you that do the 'whole thing' once a year, has the doctor ever told you or have you ever asked what this test offers that the other shorter test doesn't offer?
Also, don't mean to hijack here but how often do you guys get blood gases taken (not that I want that done if not necessary-ouch!)

ya it tracks gas trapping more accurately.

Gosh, I haven't done the box thing in a long time... I can't remember the last time for sure, but I think it was when I switched to the newly formed adult clinic (several years ago). I have only had blood gases drawn once, when I was in the hospital for a flare up.

I have the full-blown PFTs done on a yearly basis. This includes the test where you do the huff-puff-huff-puff against some resistance, as well as the test where a tiny amount of nitrogen is blown into your lungs.

In order to chart trends in lung function, my PFTs are done with every clinic visit. The minimum number of times this should happen is once each quarter (i.e. four times /year). I've been in clinic so often this year that I've probably already got almost 10 on record.

When inpatient, our respiratory team conducts PFTs twice a week to measure progress made with the course of IV treatment. They also do the 6 minute walk test at this time.

As to the "box" thing, all of my PFTs are done in there. It's the computer program that they run which determines which "type" of test they're doing--full assessment or spirometry only. Results obtained when in the telephone booth (even if the door is open) are more accurate than the others because it eliminates the possibility of "blow by" air disrupting the measurements.

Well, I don't recall ever having this kind of test done. I always do the PFT's at the clinic (blowing in the machine to measure FVC and FEV1) every 3 months. I don't recall ever hearing anything about the procedure you are referring to. I've also never had my blood gases tested. I feel like I'm in the dark about some of this stuff (lol).

I get the box once a year as part of my annual work up. It will be done more often depending on what is up with my health. Otherwise they use the spirometer to check my pfts. Either way each & every time I go for a checkup I have something UNLESS I am having hemoptysis.

I haven't had the "whole thing" done since I went to the children's hospital for clinic ... and they did it every clinic visit .... a few times if we (being my brother and I) were kept. Last time I was there I was like 16 and I'll be 25 this year.....
