Hi! I too lost about 5 lbs initially due to decreased appetite and nausea. By 20 weeks I was about the same (had maybe gained a little back). I gained 18 lbs total and had a healthy full term baby. Remember your babies are VERY SMALL right now so don't worry about weight gain at this point. Eating fatty foods like chocolate and ice cream isn't the best idea anyway. You need to be eating healthy stuff like avocados, ground flax seed or flax oil (mixed in with things like oatmeal), fatty fish like salmon (wild caught only), etc. Make sure you are getting at least 110 grams of protein a day for a twin pregnancy. Good luck. Have you considered joining the CF Nutrition Yahoo group? I know for a fact that the women on there will have lots of healthy ideas for you to gain weight.

Hi Kelly!

Honestly I didn't "do" anything to make the weight come on. By 12 weeks I gained 2lbs (up to 114) and by 20 weeks I had gained 7lbs. After that, the weight just seemed to come on. I gained until 36 weeks (up to 30lbs!!!) but didn't gain an ounce the last two weeks. I think the twins were done growing and should have been taken earlier. So keep an eye on that in the end. But for now, just relax, eat when you can, eat what you want. The twinnies will take what they need from your body. They'll be fine! The weight will start to come on when the twins get bigger. You'll see.

UNLESS...you have an underlying infection. Honestly, if you feel good and your FEV1 is stable, I would not worry one bit. Now if you're losing because of illness, that's another issue that needs to be addressed by your CF doctor. Just listen to your body, afterall, you do know it best!

Its common for normal preg women to lose weight the first trimester-this is bc of the typical nausea and stomach issues so dont panic. It might just be that.
Do you have less appetite than normal? Are you throwing up at all?
Of course since u have cf if you lose weight they will be much more talkative about it instead of chalking it up to normal pregnancy weight fluctuation-even if it is just that. That can get annoying, trust me.
They nagged me to gain 25 lbs, and I gained 20. At 36 weeks I had only gained 15 lbs! They nagged me so much. I just didn't have an apetite bc the baby was pushing so much on my stomach and if I forced myself to eat I just puked it up bc there was no room in my abdomen! I knew that once the preg was over my appetite would perk up and boy it has. Before preg I never had the typical cf weight issues. I dont' know about you-but I am 5'3" and weigh about 125-PLENTY of weight esp for a cfer!! Since I didn't have weight issues before I just knew they weren't going to start and I'd be fine.
So if your weight is stable then don't worry too much about gaining. And stress will make it worse too, so relax. Eat as much as you can now before you get so big that the babies are taking all the room and enjoy the preg! Try to get alot of protein in your diet-that will make those babies strong and give you lots of energy. Even if you drink 3 glasses of whole milk per day-thats almost 1000 calories and tons of protein. Pasta with butter has alot of calories too and its light.

It's not uncommon at all to lose a bit of weight going into the second trimester. There are any number of things that could be causing this. I'm certainly no authority on the subject (I've had 2 failed pregnancies) but as long as you're eating and not showing signs of dehydration, I wouldn't worry. Your body is probably just recalibrating which nutrients get used up at which rate by the babies. If you're carrying boys, they'll require a lot of extra calories.

You said you eat a lot of chicken. You mentioned steak too, which is good. If you can tolerate it try to incorporate some more frequent red meat into your diet. It has much more iron, protein and B vitamins than chicken.

If you're really concerned, call the doctor or your "gynosaur" and explain your concerns. They can help.

Best wishes.
