It's not uncommon at all to lose a bit of weight going into the second trimester. There are any number of things that could be causing this. I'm certainly no authority on the subject (I've had 2 failed pregnancies) but as long as you're eating and not showing signs of dehydration, I wouldn't worry. Your body is probably just recalibrating which nutrients get used up at which rate by the babies. If you're carrying boys, they'll require a lot of extra calories.

You said you eat a lot of chicken. You mentioned steak too, which is good. If you can tolerate it try to incorporate some more frequent red meat into your diet. It has much more iron, protein and B vitamins than chicken.

If you're really concerned, call the doctor or your "gynosaur" and explain your concerns. They can help.

Best wishes.

I also made sure that I had a supplement shake. I think mine was the powdered Scandishakes-not exactly yummy, but I mixed it with skim or 2% (whole milk made me nausus) and sucked it down with a straw (I did that with pretty much everything I drank- helped me to drink more water, especially- apparently not all that uncommom in pregnant women, I've learned ), right before bed, every night. I also had a few nights when I woke up really hungry, and had a bowl of cherrios or something- my husband didn't know what to think about that- I am not a midnight snacker! lol!

I will be praying for you and your babies!

hi all you lossing mommas

I am sorry to hear this and I have two bits of advice both to be taken tempered with one another A-I lost weight at first too because I was watching gestational diet etc and they totally freaked me out and I started stuffing my face with PB etc everythign they recommended and I have NEVER had trouble gaining weight I think someone stated it right that they want you to gain and then if you loose with CF they will freak out but dont worry eat as you should and let your body do the rest, the baby will be fine if anything it might hurt your bodies stores B- if you normally have CF weight issues I say start bulking up asap or trying as hard as possible because the further along you get the harder it gets to eat etc etc if you are having twins then eating becomes a full time job -- there is a book out there some of the twin moms I know referred to that is about eating for multiples and what to do you might want to look it up --never mind here I have copied a thread from the twin board for you it was in response to what to read for twins or more.

If I had trouble gaining weight, vitamin deficiency etc what I woudl have done would be a simple math calc and make that my goal. THeoretical: If I look up recommendations for my height weight when not pregnant they say I need 1400 calories, I know with my CF I need to eat 2800 to maintain my weight so 200% of recommended. They recommend 300 calorie increase per baby in pregnancy so 300x200% I would shoot for 600 calorie increase over my baseline. This is just what makes sense to me for a singleton. If I were getting in my calories and mostly form healthy sources I woudl feel confident that my body was doing the right thing--this si what I did later on. If I were having multiples I would probably try very hard to read and consider making it my goal to follow Dr. Barbara Luke's book which among other things recommends 4500 calories per day (non cf'er) with twin pregnancy and gaining 20lbs by 20 weeks. I would NOT stress if this does not happen though I know alot of twin moms who said she is WAY over the top, I havent read it though.

ps the first post is at the bottom

jemiju- another place to look is amazon.com. i got "mothering multiples" (a $20. book) for $7. including shipping from the used side of amazon.com. it came in a few days and in great condition. the dr. luke book i got at my local library.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Thanks so much for your suggestions! I'm off to search to see if i can get them at ebay before heading to the bookstore!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Both TWINS! and "When your expecting twins, triplets or quads" were like bibles for me in my pregnancy. Elizabeth Lyons has a book called "Ready or Not, here we come" for a comic but REAL book about twins in the first year as well!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I just finished it and really liked it! It is not as bare-bones practical as the other books, but it is more of a personal story. I thought the "Twins!" book by Connie Agnew was good, but it didn't have as much info as I would have liked. If I were you, I would read Dr Luke's book (even though I haven't read it, it sounds better than Dr Agnew's was), then "Mothering Multiples" if you plan to breastfeed, and then "Twinspiration" for fun! You are right, there is just not much out there, and none of them accomplish the whole job- but out of all of them, "Twinspiration" was definitely my favorite because it made me so excited about having twins. The others are more resource books. I didn't get Dr Luke's book because I got pg at a BMI of 29, so I knew I would be okay to gain a little less, and so a lot of that stuff wouldn't pertain to me (I am 23 weeks with b/g twins and have gained 10lbs so far, babies are growing great, and my Doctor says everything is good.) Happy reading!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

i agree about the dr. luke book, but don't worry if you can't maintain the high calorie intake she insists on. her best advice is to gain the 20 lbs. by 20 wks (in other words, gain early and don't worry about what people think). i'm now at 32 weeks and cannot eat 1/4 as much as i was in my 1st trimester, there is just NO MORE ROOM in my stomach.
as you get further along and if you plan on trying b-feeding, i also recommend "mothering multiples" which is put out by La Leche League. although LLL seem a bit militant about b-feeding, it is nice to have book specific to b-feeding more than 1 (can't find that in most other books) and there is alot of other good info. about what you need, what to expect in labor, NICU, etc.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hi -
I 2nd the Dr. Barbara Luke book. She runs the U of Mich clinic that caters to multiple births. If you follow her diet, 4500 calories per day of the right stuff, your babies will have a 30+ % higher birth weight than a non-follower.

Good luck!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I agree with the pp and I also had a book called Twins! Pregnancy, Birth and the First Year of Life by Connie L. Agnew, M.D., Alan H. Klein, M.D., Jill Alison Ganon. It had specific things for twins.

I would recommend "twins, triplets, and quads" by Dr Luke. It has a ton of information, just remember to take it as suggestions! It has info on all sorts of stuff related to twins. I used the book as a guide to how to be during my pregnancy...

Congrats on your twin pregnancy! It was a LONG pregnancy for me, but so worth it in the end!

Hi all,
I am 7w pg with twins, and was curious if anyone has any ideas/suggestions for a book to learn about a twin pregnancy. I have "what to expect when you're expecting" and Your pregnancy Week by week" but neither have too much info on twins.
Thanks for any info!!!

Thanks for any info!!!

hi all you lossing mommas

Hi -
I 2nd the Dr. Barbara Luke book. She runs the U of Mich clinic that caters to multiple births. If you follow her diet, 4500 calories per day of the right stuff, your babies will have a 30+ % higher birth weight than a non-follower.

Good luck!
