Please help. MRSA in my 4 year old

I am so upset. Aidan's culture just came back positive for MRSA. Can people please shed some light for me on treatments and the effects of MRSA. Does MRSA come from not treating Staph A? I am devastated. Now they want to put in a port and give IVs. He just turned 4 years old. Out of our center's 100 patients, only 10 culture this.

Ellie has only ever cultured staph A so I'm not sure about MRSA. It is my understanding that MRSA is somewhat common to cfers. She has however had a broviac line (which is similar to a PICC but went through her chest) put in when she was 2.5 months old and was on IVs for three weeks, and again three more weeks a couple about a month later. We realy wanted a port but she was too little for one. The great thing about a port is he can have it for years and they are not always missing when trying to find a vein. Another thing about the port it allows you to do IVs at home instead of staying in the hospital the entire time he is on IVs. You also don't have as big a risk for infection since it is under the skin. You do have to learn how to flush an IV and such and the first couple of times can be nerve wracking but it does get easier. I know this is scary, I'll be praying for you and your little guy.

If not, can they do the port at the same time? This might make it easier. I know Becky (Hayley's mom) as been REALLY happy with the port.

My understanding is that as long as it isn't causing a problem they are going to let it be. (Not exactly the way I like to play, I prefer offensive to defensive manuevers, but I don't have the degrees).

Kids in my daughter's school who do not have CF have recently been found to be MRSA carriers. The local schools had a pretty big outbreak of it last year. Most of the local doctor offices have notices up right when you walk in warning what a MRSA skin infection might look like and instructing you to tell right away if you think you might have one.

There is some info out there that suggests being infected with MRSA will cause more hospitalizations/sicknesses. Marissa has only been hospitalized twice in two years, 2 years ago for a stubborn ear infection, and last February for DIOS. So far it has not caused any infections, but her FEV1 and Peak Flow are dropping now without her culturing anything else.

I hope they get rid of it for you.
