Port not working right

Hello,

My port is giving me some troubles I will explain what went on and I would like to hear from others on what my best solution would be.

Ok, I get my port all ready to flush for this month and I hook up the saline and go to push it in and yikes I get some pain in my neck where the tubing is ran at and it shoots pain clear up to my ear. So I change postions and check that the port neddle is in all the way and try again to push the saline through still get the same pain. So, I hook up the heprin and try it thinking maybe it is a little clot just blocking the way well heprin makes little head way and I finally flush it slowly I mean slowly with the saline and finish with the heprin. I believe I have a clot but not sure if maybe working with more heprin would remove it or if I need to go to the hospital for TPA to be dripped through it for a few hours.

What is your opinion on what I should do? Or even if you think I may have tried something different? Any Advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in Advance

Especially with the weird pain in your neck, I would suggest going to the hospital. I don't know what TPA is, but do I assume correctly when I think it's probably a stronger blood thinner?

I had a problem with my port not flushing once. Actually, it was flushing, but it was going so damn slow. So I called a nurse and they put in this super-Heparin stuff, and let it sit in the port for half an hour. Then she sucked it back out and the problem was basically fixed. I never got the name of the stuff, but it was like port Drano.

I would suggest going to get that. If that's TPA, then yes, get that. Make sure to mention the pain though, because that sounds almost as if it has slipped to an unusual location or something. I know the line goes up towards your neck, but if it's causing pain, it sounds like something is really wrong with it. I've never had pain in my port, after it healed. And never anywhere in the line.

I say best play it safe. <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

the catheter may have slipped out the vein. this happened to me once. the pain was an awful stinging shooting pain. best way to figure out what is wrong is to get a venography done.

I agree with the group. I had a life port for 3yrs and it never caused me much harm, but I also didn't do a lot of living for fear of moving it out of place, or damaging it. I'm curious, when you access your port, and flush, does your neck swell? If it has come out of the vein then the liquid would ooze into the muscle tissue. I've been told those ports can also migrate or move from their spot. But I doubt it would cause pain at the other end. Another thing to consider, is infection. Its rare but you can still infect a life port. In my years of having one, I never felt pain other than from the surgical site. (my body just never liked having something stuck inside) Pain in any degree is not a good thing. I would most definitely talk to your doctor and let him know your having pain in the neck when accessing your port. I believe thats the only time you feel the pain right? Hope you get better soon.
