Portacath Removal

Matt, here is what you need to say:

1. Hit the call button and ask for the 'charge nurse' when someone comes ask if they are the charge nurse. If they saw no, then repeat your request. Don't discuss your concerns until you get the charge nurse.

2. Once you get the change nurse, tell him/her that you need to speak to the on-call attending. They will probably balk, refuse to negotiate. You will finally get a Dr are the nurse is legally obligated to call a Dr.

3. You will very likely get a resident, at most large hospitals, politely explain your concern. BUT tell them you still expect them to call the attending. Don't let them walk out of the room w/o a plan to address your issues.

The only way you are going to get the care you deserve is to demand it, politely, and not take no.

Thanks Tom for your advice.
I decided to have my primary order an xray.
And I stood in front of the nurse until she paged him and
he called back. He ordered an xray. I will know if it is for sure a port
in there by the end of the day but I will see if theyll let me look at it
right after they take the picture.
The surgeon wont be available until tomorrow. But I guess the surgeons
office knows about it. So I will speak to a surgeon either way tomorrow.
I talked to a random onc resident at the nurses station. Cause I know onc patients get
ports alot so I thought she might know something. She didnt feel it but she said since it
was in there so long that it could be scar tissue which is what Ive heard before...about 10 times.
I am praying it is.
As soon as I know more I will update everyone.
Thank you for the support everyone!!!
I really need it right now.
God Bless!

I too just want to say, you are being so strong in a quite a disgusting situation. I have a hard time "laying down the law", which is soo dumb b/c its my body and my care. Although I am pretty vocal with nurses and anything to do with my central lines (piccs or port), but most everything else I kinda roll with the punches....

I hope you get some answers and I am glad you have taken as much charge as you can considering the facility you are in. what area are you in so maybe someone can help you look for another center?

I didnt read everything. I just wanted to say that I had my port removed back in April & another one was not put in it's place. I know because I was awake during the removal. And yes, it still feels like my port is there. As the swelling goes down it will get less but I had it removed in mid-April and it still feels like it is there. It is from the scar tissue. If the surgeon did not mention anything about a new port placement then I would say there is not one in there. By law, if he put another port in it's place he has to document it. If not, that is falsifying (sp?) medical records. If the question is still there, request an X-ray just to be sure.
