I've had mine for 6 months now (my first one) and I wish I had gotten mine sooner. Admits (hospitalizations) are so much less complicated, and no more hassling with piccs and picc nurses.

Mine is placed in upper right clavical (under collar bone) and is very small. It is probably a dime-size in diameter and about 1/4 inch deep (?).
I am also skinny in my chest area (shoulders etc), but even so, mine really isn't that visible. I was also concerned about it for that very same reason.

I orginally wanted it near my arm pit, but looking back, it's easier to take shirts on and off with it where it's at, when it's accessed.

Something to consider:
With picss and lines going through my armpit area, I had always had trouble with line-pinching and therefore I.v.'s beeping at night. Now, I have NO problems in that way - No "occlusion" beeping!!!

It's never in the way of my bra, however selt belts (as a passenger) do rub it sometimes, but not really a big deal.
I haven't had experience yet as far as beach-wear...although I'm not shy or embarrassed, so it wouldn't bother me really.

As for the surgery, I had no real "pain" after the implant, only some initial discomfort because of swelling and stuff. It was back to normal within a few days.

Best Wishes. I believe you'll welcome the change. I did!!!

My first port was in my lower left forearm. It lasted 10 years but was really sensitive to touch. Everyone seemed to grab me there and I hated it. But it did last a long time. It was too obvious of a location and it was hard to hide. Like I had to wear long sleeves in summer.

My port now is in my upper chest (right side about 4" down from collar bone). It's so much easier to access and it's not very obvious. You actually see the scar more than the port 'bump.' Seatbelts do touch it but don't even bother it when I'm accessed. So it's really easy to deal with. I like this spot and would probably have it placed there again in the future!

Good luck with choosing a spot for yours! <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

I had mine on my rib cage, similar to Emily's. I loved having it there. It gave out after 10 years and had to be removed. I will be getting another one in June, probably the same place but opposite side.
