Post-transplant

Transplant life is very normal to me. I stay very healthy and if I feel run down, I take it easy.

In all my years having new lungs, I can say that I had two colds that lasted a few weeks. In those two weeks, I did not feel too bad. If you have lung congestion it is very minimal and very easy to deal with.

No worries

I forgot to mention that I was single when I had my first transplant. I decided to date within three months after my surgery. I was tired of sitting home etc.. so I approached the dating scene with confidence and knowing that if I find a nice guy who I want to spend time with, I will tell them on the first date so they do not think that I was cold for not getting romantically involved.

When I met my husband he told me he worked for the CDC and I felt he was extremely aware of good hygiene. He never gets any colds because he eats healthy and is very clean with his hands. He had one cold in eleven years.

Everything depends on your drug levels. If you are taking many drugs for a period of time, you need to be very careful. If you are not taking too many drugs than you have no worries.

I have seen people at my clinic where they put their fingers in their mouths. Doing this at home is acceptable but at a hospital yuck. What I am trying to say is that many people lead a very active life post transplant and nothing will stop them. I think that is wonderful.

I believe it is the fear of germs that will make you sick rather than the actual germ.

That part made me chuckle. Hah.

Edited to add: And thanks, Pete, for letting me know it was Kurt. I had never known who it was. I changed it in my signature.

I know somebody mentioned it earlier but what the heck for risk of repeating it, you're really not supposed to have grapefruit. It heightens (for lack of a better word) the effectiveness of drugs.. I know that people have people have died due to overdosing when they have just taken normal amounts of medications along with grapefruit. There's a risk with everything. *shrug

Anyway from both clinics I've been to it's been 'highly suggested' to stay away from these things: riding in an unpressurized plane, swimming in public pools (increased risk of getting MRSA, etc), tattoos and piercings due to exposure to the air and a compromised immune system, it's really suggested that you stay away from gardening/poo etc due to germs and bugs that live in there (but hey it's life not like you can avoid it completely as others have said), and a hand full of other common sense things. Stay away from sick people, blah blah blah...

There are a couple of things that I've never seen mentioned on any forums before but it's always been told to me.. 1) don't throw up. Reeeeaaaaally bad idea. Since you're nerves have been cut you can't feel if you inhale anything into your lungs. This is a great potential for infection. Coincidentally I managed to get food poisoning a year after my transplant, spent a day just tossing my cookies... 3 months later I had a growth in my lung that had to be surgically removed.. so yeah I highly suggest avoiding that one. 2) No fellatio. If you don't know what that is take caution when looking it up. Anyway this runs off the same theory of the 'don't throw up' situation. Can't feel when you inhale something, can't cough it out...

Then again as people have said this is life so we can't avoid everything, just use common sense.

If fellatio is against the rules... then I'm screwed. Ah well. I can live on being careful in public, avoiding colds, washing my hands, wearing masks, etc etc. All that annoying crap. But I'm not about to eliminate things from my sex life for it.

While we're on the subject... and you mentioned nerve loss... do you lose your boob nerves? Or your nipple nerves? Any of that?
