We had some concerns with one of DH's uncles by marriage. Was a smoker for years and now has lung issues. DH expressed concerns to his parents about one of the holiday dinners they host -- concerns with the uncle possibly coughing and sputum being transferred to surfaces DS might touch, etc.

More often than not this relative has been too sick to attend family events; however, we did appreciate the fact that HE was concerned enough about it that he's asked his doctor to run cultures without our even expressing our concerns to him.

I read somewhere that pseudo can live on surfaces for several days! You may want to check out the CFF site about cross contamination issues or ask your doctor about extra precautions when visiting your mother's house if this person has been there visting...

A similar topic came up before regarding MRSA. I was concerned because my inlaws wanted to visit a relative whose wife cultured mrsa pneumonia and we were concerned about the potential for them to end up carrying it back to DS. Someone posted about how they have MRSA and the precautions her parents take to keep her sister wcf from getting it.

Ditto what everyone else has already said.

I was very concerned when my youngest started culturing PA about two years ago. I thought for sure Kayla would catch it...they sleep in the same room, sometimes same bed, they are in each others faces giggling and talking (and sometimes arguing). But, two years later, she still hasn't cultured it. Although, I think I would trade the Cepacia she caught in for the PA

But, yes, it can be spread between people. We have been fortunate that Kayla didn't catch it from Hannah though.

Probably because the smoking affected the lungs -- lung damage, cilia bogged down with tar, extra thick mucus, makes them just as suspectible to infection. That's why were were concerned about the uncle -- he tends to get pneumonia several times a year, is on oxygen at night, has to use a nebulizer, productive cough...

I should also add that my MIL was NOT happy when we expressed concerns about a few relatives with health issues that could affect DS's health. She gets so embarrassed about what others might think. But we've got to look at the big picture here -- our son's lungs, keeping him healthy!
