Pulmozyme or not?

I started on Pulmozyme when I was 9 and my PFTs were 100+ %. It's been a great med for me. While Pulmozyme doesn't work for everybody, there is no rule that you should only use it at 40% or lower. I'm still using it now (at 70%) and it helps me a lot.

Hypertonic saline can be very rough. Some people just can't take it. I take it, but it's difficult. It's just very harsh to breathe in (especially if you're doing 6% or 7% or higher -- I use 3%). It's worth trying, as, for one, it's MUCH cheaper. But Pulmozyme isn't bad if they don't tolerate the HTS well. I happen to use both. And yes, it's nebulized. It breaks up a lot of the crap in the lungs, and makes you cough. Like I said, it can be pretty harsh... but it does work pretty well too. It'll just be a matter of whether or not they can tolerate it.

Like Emily, I have never heard of a rule that you should not be on it unless your FEV1 is under 40%. But on the other hand, I have heard, the drug's indications actually say that if your FEV1s are over 75%, then you may benefit from twice a day.

I'm not sure if I suscribe to the thought that Pulmozyme destroys healthy lung tissue. I think everyone with CF has to some extent, some excessive mucus in their lungs. If not, let me ask you this, why do they have you start doing CPT right away. If you don't feel your son has any mucus for pulmozyme to break up, why are you doing the vest?

I think Pulmozyme is a great thing for healthy lungs and to maintain them.

You know the point of Pulmozyme is that it loosens the crap in the lungs, making it esier to cough up. Maybe he doesn't bring anything up because he can't. Another possible explanation would be that he does cough stuff up, and he just swallows it. A lot of us do that. If you aren't catching it at the *EXACT* right time, he may be swallowing it before you can get to it. The other possibility is that he may be healthy enough to where he doesn't cough much of anything spectacular up. Either way, Pulmozyme is not likely to hurt him.
