Hi Alissa,
You can do peripherials at home if you choose to. I am on week 3 of iv antibiotics and we are using peripherials . Mine last anywhere between 3 - 8 days depending on how good the site is. I was scheduled for a midline ( i wont do a picc anymore), but it didnt work out, so we stuck with peripherials. I never get them in my hand though ( terrible spot for them) i usually get them on my forearm somewhere or in the crook of my arm if i have to. I used to get piccs but had not so good experiences with them and refused to ever get another ( I....like you cant stand the idea of something 20 some inches long in my arm). I will however get a midline. It is about 7 - 8 inches long ( only to your shoulder). They give you a shot of Lidocaine to numb the vein and surrounding area and believe me the midline going in is a breeze. You dont feel it, until after the lidocaine wears off, then you feel achy in the general area but not any more than how you would with a regular peripheral. You may wish to try that. That way you dont have to get re-stuck like you do with peripherals.
