Question about home health care

Hi Alissa,
You can do peripherials at home if you choose to. I am on week 3 of iv antibiotics and we are using peripherials . Mine last anywhere between 3 - 8 days depending on how good the site is. I was scheduled for a midline ( i wont do a picc anymore), but it didnt work out, so we stuck with peripherials. I never get them in my hand though ( terrible spot for them) i usually get them on my forearm somewhere or in the crook of my arm if i have to. I used to get piccs but had not so good experiences with them and refused to ever get another ( I....like you cant stand the idea of something 20 some inches long in my arm). I will however get a midline. It is about 7 - 8 inches long ( only to your shoulder). They give you a shot of Lidocaine to numb the vein and surrounding area and believe me the midline going in is a breeze. You dont feel it, until after the lidocaine wears off, then you feel achy in the general area but not any more than how you would with a regular peripheral. You may wish to try that. That way you dont have to get re-stuck like you do with peripherals.

The biggest things that I have had done is an X-ray, blood draws, and an enema.</end quote></div>

I'm pretty sure I'd rather have a PICC line than an enema, but that's just me. <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

For the record, I have a port and love it. You said your sister has a port; have you considered that or would it have the same problems for you that a PICC has?</end quote></div>

I had to laugh at your response. Yeah, the enema thing isn't something I want to experience again either. I was in grade school when I had that due to some stomach bug. Not a pleasent experience!! As for the port, I think I would have the same problem with that. I have a hard time even looking at the one my sister has (it's just a little below her collar bone).

Thanks everybody for your tips and suggestions. Diane, thanks for the info. I'm glad to hear that it can be done at home. That gives me some relief. I talked to the nurse today and the dr. is going to go ahead and put me on another oral. I know I can't keep going on oral antibiotics, so I'm sure if this doesn't kick it then I'll have to get the IV therapy. Thanks again!
