Question about mixing Colistin

Colistin lasts for 1 week in the fridge once it is mixed. Also my doctor told me to take 2 ml of saline, mix it with the colistin, then draw out 1ml from that and mix it with 2ml of water. That way you are doing 75 mg of colistin twice a day.

Remember if you do store it though, keep it in the fridge. It needs to be cooled.

It's kinda wierd how we all have different answers haha.

I use 2.5mL sterile water (I used to use with 2mL, but found just that little extra bit of sterile water helps reduce foaming.) I mix sterile water with 150mg vial of Colistin, and inhale all 150mg 2x/day for 28 days. I see most people inhale only 75mg at each dose and now I am wondering if I am doing it incorrectly. I've been doing it this way for years, but I will have to double check with my doc. Does anyone else do 150mg per dose?

Also I mix right before use...you really shouldn't reconstitute and store. Just give it about 5 minutes after mixing to settle and reduce foam. I re-use the saline vials, just wipe with alcohol pad before next use. I use a new syringe at every dose.

I have tried using in a few different neb cups and find that the LC Plus works well and foams the least. It doesn't take long to inhale...about 10 minutes.

Elizabeth, I also do the 150mg twice a day for 28 days, per the written script (I double checked, just to make sure ), so I guess it just depends on you and your doctor . I mix mine with 3ml of sterile water.

I did 150mg 2x/day and I mix with sterile water. I too use a little bit extra sterile water than prescribed. Seems it makes it easier to take. I was told to try the lower 75mg dose next time around though because 150 seems a bit much for me. There is research on both doses and it really depends on your sensitivities and other factors. I did a little looking around at some of the research studies to see and it seemed that the higher dose was used a lot for hospital patients or severe exacerbations. That was my limited recollection and both doses were effective for patients. So it really depends on what you and your doctor decide.
