Ok, everyone, I am a relatively healthy 25 year old male, participated in college cross country and track, and kept training after college, continuing to get better and better at all my distances. I guess we could start last summer, I started getting sores in my mouth and sinus problems. I went to an ENT and was eventually diagnosed with sinusitis. I've had antibiotics over time, but these seem to keep coming back. I lost a lot of training time and got really out of shape. In the past few weeks, I had been training hard, building my base back up when just this Friday I started feeling ill once again. I was all tired, my sinuses were all congested, ugly greenish yellow discharge from my nose in the morning(has since gone away), neck glands swollen, and it seems my saliva is always kind of thick and slimy, although usually clear. What worries me also is that I have pretty regular abdominal pains, both sides of my body often hurt even worse when on some runs. I guess my breathing's been normal, I mean, I've had issues with not being able to breathe my best when running hard and stuff like that, but I'm not really coughing or struggling to breathe, so I'm not sure. Am I overreacting? Initially I was scared maybe I had gotten an STD because of these things and fatigue, but I have always practice safe sexual practices in the past, and I happened to look up mucus like saliva and bowel movements and CF came up. I'm really scared, I also have had anxiety issues, so maybe I am overreacting. I really hope I am. From what I read this seems like a terrible disease, and I hope God blesses everyone that has it and someday soon there's a cure. But does it sound like I could have it, or does it sound like something less severe. I tried to taste my sweat while I was on a run and it didn't taste extremely salty or anything, so I dunno what to think..

thanks and take care everyone

runner82 i am a mother of an 18 year old in the process of genetic testing, He began having symptoms around 13 but more severe at 15 when he was in highschool sports. My doctor said he was too old to have CF. I came on line as you did and found that not to be true. My advice to you is to talk to your doctor about your concerns. Ask for a sweat test if he tells you no go to another. Your gut instinct is what you should go on always when you feel anything could be wrong with your health. You must take care of you!! I'm sure you are precious to your family and so taking good care of you is just what you must do. If you do get a sweat test and are not satisfied. Get genetic tests done. there is over 1500 mutations of Cf. causing symptoms to be severe at a young age and some that cause symptoms later in life. My son has bad sinus problems and sweats chrystalized salt. His lung, pulmonary tests are good, he is 5'5" amd about 180 lbs. He could model for a surfing magazine, but I and he too knows someting is just not quiet right with his health. The best of luck with dealing with doctors on this subject, many should be logging in to continually educate themselves!! God Bless!!

well thanks for the reply. I wish I had a mother that cared like that about me, I tell mine about what I'm going through and she really treats it like it's no big deal, even though I'm not feeling right and in pain a lot of the time. I'm currently unemployed and between jobs so I don't have health benefits, so right now seeing a doctor isn't a possibility. It's always this whole "get a job" if I try to talk to my mother, so I basically feel like no one cares about me and with this whole "I don't know what's wrong with me thing", I've contemplated just ending all my misery several times in the past and who knows as it continues to frustrate me.
Anyway, H2OSPORTSMOM, I wish you and your son the best of luck, and I am really happy to see you care about your son the way that you do and not neglect or blow him off like I get..

Any suggestions, the thing really nagging me right now is some bad abdominal pain on my right side, right below my rib cage. Is that a CF symptom or does it sound like something else? Anyone? I'm a nervous wreck, thanks

runner82,

The abdominal pain is not necessarily a CF thing - it could be anything from some other serious problem to simply over training (you said you'd been training hard)

The sinus stuff, yes could be a CF symptom but then again could very likely be just sinusitis and or even allergy problems.

The swollen neck glands -- hmmmm probably should be checked out unless you feel it's just part of a common flu or cold virus thing going on. If you have a sinus infection going on right now that could account for the swollen glands and feeling run down.

Are you on any medication for the anxiety issues? Is there any possibility of seeing a doctor for even just a general checkup to double check on the swollen glands & abdominal pain?

Sounds like you also need to address the suicidal thoughts as well -- that may tie into the anxiety issues so if you can get one under control the other will straighten out too.

I'm not sure where to suggest going to get help, but there has to be something available through social services or suicide help line to get you some counseling and initial medical help -- I think you need to address the suicide, anxiety & abdominal pain issues first then worry about figuring out if you have CF later.
