School problems

Wow, thank yall so much for all of your great advice!! It truely touches me that people took the time out of their life to help me with mine. I feel much better knowing what I have to do. It's a shame like Abbysmom said that her school is definately not "trying hard enough" to help her situation. But that's why I will have to make them by getting on a plan. Does anyone know by chance which one is better IDEA or 504? It's crazy that I never even heard of either til this year. The CF clinic never even suggested it. I did see on the CFF site a hotline # for legal questions for it so I need to check that out.

I noticed a few people mention I should get the nurse involved. When I said in my origianl message that this was a few of the problems, well the nurse is part of it too. She said a while back when the teacher remembering was a problem that she would be the extra back up and she would put a reminder where she would see and call Makailyn down at her time. That never happened. The only time she did get it on time was on the 2 days I'm off during the week, thurs and fri b/c I would go up there at 10:15 to make sure she down in the clinic by 10:40 and ready for lunch at 11:00. But now that we can do the inhaler ,we no longer have to deal with that issue. Thank God.

Also, I did email the teacher about the paper. She first said that it was a redo paper and the highest grade she gives a redo is a 70%. I reminder her that it had 2 questions out of 10 with the # to the problem circled and wrote INC next to the problem. Then she says that does mean it is incomplete but wants me to bring the paper back to her(so I put it in her binder Friday) so she can remember what happened. Lol. But at first she was sure it was a redo! My daughter says she remembers her putting the paper down and telling her to finish it. I don't think anyone there has a clue. I really wish I did not choose this school. Where I live you can pick what school you want as long as it is not full and if it is you have to go to the one for your area. When I visited this school and told the staff she had CF they were really nice and said that be

Oops, didnt mean to send that already! Anyway's they made me feel like since they had had 2 students (siblings) that recently attended the school that had CF,and that they already knew alot about it and would be very understanding. I didnt realize then either that one of the siblings would still be at her school. Her brother moved to middle school but the sis is still there. She was so excited to know someone was at the school that was just like her! But I wonder if it is not good for 2 cf's to be in the same school. Makailyn said she was in the clinic one day and the other girl was coughing up mucus and Makailyn was right there. No mask or anything. Her mom says that her daughter has not grown any kind of stuff but mine has-pseudemonas and staph.

Well, thanks again for everyone's responses!

Hi Kate620,

There isn't one better than the other - they are different in the way that a 504 is mostly for accomodations, and an IEP is for academic-specific goals. For example, if she needed transportation to the school, she would get a 504, but if she needed modified goals for say reading, then she would need an IEP. IEP also have testing accomodations (because it falls under academics), so it all depends on what she needs. I have known some kids that have both. Go to the IDEA (Individuals with Disabilities Education Act) idea.ed.gov, to get more info - I would sugget the school, but it seems that wouldn't work <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0"> The IDEA website should have info on both getting and IEP and getting a 504.

I would also recommend going to your school's district office - they have to employ people that work directly with IDEA, as it is federal mandate - the schools also get tons of money to aide in meeting the accomodations needed by their students with disabilities!

Use them, and make them do this!
