Sinus problems?

I have "atypical" (mild) CF. I am primarily a sinus sufferer. No surgeries. One thing that helped me a whole lot was a xylitol-saline rinse instead of the usual hypertonic saline rinse. Here is the recipe I used:
http://healthgazelle.org/xylitolsalinesolution.shtml

I found that it was far more effective than saline and I could use less salt in the mixture while getting better results. This meant it didn't burn so badly, which made it much easier to do them frequently. When I was real, real sick, I irrigated my sinuses several times a day. Right now, I typically do it twice: In the morning when I get up and in the evening before I go to bed. (I don't use saline anymore but I don't recommend what I currently use, which I could not have tolerated when I was real sick because it would have burned too much.) Irrigating my sinuses several times a day with that helped them gradually get better. I also put carmex in my nose before going to work and before going to bed. It has cut way back on the blood in the mucus. Consuming sea salt has helped a whole lot too with producing healthy mucus that works like it's supposed to, which means less blood in my nose.

Good luck with this.

I do have sinus problems but I have never had to have surgery on mine. I don't get the sinus headaches but I get the drainage and the extremely stuffy nose. The sinus rinses didn't seem to help for me. All I do now is take Afrin when I get too stuffy.

hey there...

I had sinus issues when I was younger. I had MAJOR polyp issues until I had the surgery in 8th grade (about 10 yrs ago). After the surgery I've had weird (TMI warning) drainage and dried blood issues...though since the surgery I've developed scar tissue that caused a deviated septum (which I believe is to blame for all the other issues I have now). Since the polyp removal I haven't had any recurring polyps, just scar tissue and I am SO glad I had the surgery...it made life for my sinuses so much better. Hope my input helps and all is well with you!

Hey Pammie,

Eleven years ago I went to two surgeons who both said I needed extensive surgery for my right sinus which was 100% blocked. My pulmonary doctor gave me a regimen to follow to try to shrink the probable polyp and the tissue swelling of sinusitis. It seemed like it wasn't working so surgery was scheduled.

A few days before the surgery, I thought the sinus was starting to open, draining down the back of my throat. The surgeon told me that that was impossible. I showed up at the hospital for the surgery and miraculously there was a fire in an operating room and the ceiling sprinklers went off soaking all the operating rooms. The surgery was canceled and rescheduled for 2 days later.

The day before the surgery, I looked in the mirror and saw stuff dripping down the back of my throat. I insisted on another CT scan because I was so sure I didn't need surgery anymore. Turned out my sinus was now normal and I would have had an unncessary surgery!

It took 5 months but this is what I did:

1. Singulair: asthma drug that has an off-use of shrinking nasal tissue
2 Nasal Rinse with saline nasal packets (no burning because it's .09% saline same as your body) 2 or 3 times a day
3. Nasal Sprays: Nasalchrom (OTC), Astilin, Nasonex (or another steroidal drug)
4 Claritin (or another antihistimine)

No problems since. I still do the same today.
