Sinus rinses/Nasal irrigations

I remember when my doctor first told me to do nasal rinses. I resisted for a long time thinking it was going to feel like drowning. I was wrong. It is completely comfortable. The salt is in the same percentage as what is in our bodies, so it shouldn't burn. If there is burning, it means the sinuses could be very inflamed and then you would have to deal with that before attempting nasal rinses (I only met one person that complained of this).

The water goes in one nostril and crosses over and comes out the other nostril. It should not go down your throat. You breath through your mouth. You squueze the bottle, so you control the force. Maybe you should buy a bottle and do it and show your daughter it is nothing.

I like the brand Sinus Cleanse because the opening is wide and has a better chance of drying in between uses rather than the Neilmed. But I like the Neilmed salt packets better.

If you want to buy Neilmed though, Costco had 2 bottles and salt packets for around $13.00.

Thank you so much. This is very reassuring to know! Showing my daughter with one of my own might be a very good idea (and also give me an idea of how hard to squeeze the bottle before doing it on her...)

I do occasionally have the burning. It hurts for a minute and then is ok. Also, CVS sells the saline in a box of 100 for $9.99. Which is a little cheaper than the Neil Med which is $12.99. If you ask your clinic they may be able to set you up with a sample kit which has the bottle and a few packets of the saline. That is where I got my first set up. The trick also is to make sure the water is not too hot or too cold. A nice lukewarm temperature works. Also either use distilled or boil the water before using.

Hi Harriett, If you would like a pedi sample kit of the Neil Med sinus rinse and can't get one from your doc or clinic send me a PM and I'll send one to you. My husband is a ENT PA and we can get them easily. I'd be happy to send you one.

My oldest has been irrigating since she was 14. I have to admit, my youngest refuses to do it. She says she can't get the hang of it. My oldest says it's easy and learned really quickly.

There is also a make your own recipe if you'd like I can give you that too.
