sinus surgery anyone?

Well I guess my poor husband really got the short end of the stick (as usual!).... he has had at least 27 separate polypectomy/sinus surgeries in his lifetime. He was dx at birth. His most recent sinus surgery was last month (Sept 07) and throughout his childhood/adolescence they were at least one a year. (He's only 30).

Yes, they have told us numerous times that they are cautious/hesitant to do unnecessary surgery on him because of the lung component and difficulty on the lungs from the anasthesia. However, you have to weigh the benefits of your sinuses getting cleaned out against the surgery component. His sinuses have been awful enough his whole life that getting them cleaned out is better because it helps limit the infection (somewhat) that is draining down into his lungs.

He doesn't have a keen sense of smell, however he has had FAR more than you ever will. It certainly has not destroyed it altogether though, he can still smell his own farts quite well! <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

ROFL....just about snorted some wine up my nose reading that! Ha ha.

I had sinus surgery 2 yrs ago. It was a major help. I still have my sense of smell as well, but have terrible allergies which do affect it. Allergies cause the congestion which leads to infections which affects smell. I hope I don't have to go through it again, but have to say it was worth it. I couldn't even breathe through my nose before the surgery. Now I just have to work hard to keep it all clear (nasal rinses, sprays, allergy shots, etc.)

I believe that my symptoms were obv constant stuffy nose...and my parents said you could look up into my nose and see the polyps...they were hanging out of my nose, but they were very close. I do remember being able to breathe sooooo much better after and being able to smell. I remember one of my friends saying, I think like a day after the surgery, that I didnt look any different..lol.

For al three of my surgeries, they kept me overnight prob b/c of the anasthesia thing. Also, b/c of the anasthesia I would get very nasueas and usually throw up blood. This is because the blood from taking the polyps out has to drain somewhere. It was by no means bad tho, I would throw up once, and then pretty much be back to my old self. I would be ready to eat! I am very sure you will feel so much better! Good Luck and keep us posted!

I can't smell anything which is very disheartening, but when I'm in the subway and everyone around me is not so happy about the smells, i think well there are positives to everything! hahahahah. I do get jealous when I can't smell breakfast, or when I'm in a restaurant and I just want to smell the food...but hey you win some you lose some!

My sinus surgeries were always very bloody. I find that I always have to sleep sitting up for a week or two until the bleeding stops so that it doens't drip into my lungs.
