skin allergy test

I had the blood test that looks at IgE levels for about 15-20 things...it picked up two kinds of dust mites and cats. It was one blood draw and not painful.

I had the on the back pricks. Also, not painful, just a bit itchy. That picked up dust, mildly tree molds and cats, and extra mildly dogs.

Now, I get allergy shots. My dust and mold arm gets a bump and is itchy, cat and dog arm has no reaction.

Traditional allergies aren't my biggest problem, but I figure it is worth it to fix this. (I am more likely to tighten up with smoke or perfumes in the air.) When I was a kid I had shots for 3-4 years--I was severely allergic to pollen, dust, cats and mold. So, you can see that the pollen portion of the shots worked the best.

My son's lips get itchy when he eats certain foods, but he did not react according to the bloodwork.

Noah had the "scratch test" and it consisted of pressure applied on plastic pegs treated w/ allergens. It only took half an hour. Of course he didn't react until 2 days later. Must go back to allergist in 3 months. They also told me that the tests are helpful, but do not change his tx.

Nightwriter: Good tip on the rechecking. I had no idea that the reaction could be delayed. They did the test at 9am this morning, so when I pick her up from school today, I will look again just to make sure. She did have a reaction to the control hystamine, everything else was fine.

We had the same exact test done today, scratch test. We needed to rule out allergies being the cause of a severe drop in PFT's a few weeks back since we do have a new puppy in the house. (Jae generally hovers in the 86-93% area since she is still in the learning curve of blowing properly. April 14th she was at 70% pre albuterol and 81% post albuterol, needless to say I was freakin out) Long story short, she itched like mad for fifteen minutes and they wouldn't let her touch her back. Out of frustration and a overwhelming desire to move, she cried for a bit. I blew on her back and read her favorite book until the fifteen minutes were over. Test came back negative for all allergies as it did when she was three years old. Funny thing is, she sneezes ALL THE TIME. I was 100% sure there was something there.

Overall, the visit was the BOMB!!!! Jae blew over 100% today for the first time since her tune up back in 2007 and just 3 weeks ago at her last visit she blew a 70%. I didn't think it was possible but we have been spending massive time at the beach and really working hard on upping her CPT and vest to an hour twice daily. It sucks to have to do more than what we already do but it certainly paid off today. No hospitalization for us and no home IVs, so it was totally worth it. I walked in expecting an admission chit chat. Everyone was throwing high fives in the room and there were some happy tears from me for the first time in a long time. I am sooo proud of her! <img src="i/expressions/heart.gif" border="0">

You say if the area is reddish after a csrtain amount of time that that proves positive...what if you have sensitive skin? How do they determine if you are jsut reacting to the pricks or if you are in face allergic?

Reece has VERY sensitive skin. In fact he has red itchy skin already on the backs of his arms, legs & now his lower back.
