Manda,
I too am glad that candles, fresheners, smoke ect don't affect you. As nanaof8girls said she don't want to use a bunch of fragrance to trigger an attack. Grayson is my daughter (the smelly baby we are talking about lol) and we don't use a ton of smelly stuff since it does cause her to cough more and sneeze and eyes get watery. We are living a normal life for us. Grayson's first 6 months of life was in the NICU with 3 surgeries. If not using air fresheners and staying away from certain things is what we need to do to keep her healthy, then thats what we do. She lives with a g-tube and dozens of meds. We do chest therapy 2-3 daily. Even if we skip a treatment we can tell. I know CFers cough normally but why would we expose her to things that would cause her more discomfort? Im not saying we never use air fresheners because we do. The main question was how can we get rid of the bad smelling odor without having to bomb our homes with odor masking sprays.

We have a total of 4 children in our home. Not once did i think we arn't living our lives to the fullest. We play outside, we go to parties, we go pick pumpkins, and play in the dirt.

Welcome to the site. I have learned a lot of things from others. I hope you can too.

Manda, First I would like to say Welcome to the site. Since you are an adult, you are responsible for your own health and I am happy that you are doing so well. Please don't take your good health for granted. I am going to say this as kindly as possible but if you were my child, even at 24, I probably would be concerned with your lack of care and treatments. Graycie's health is our responsiblity and we take that very seriously. She has had a very difficult time in her short little life and we just want to make sure she stays healthly. She is sensitive to alot of things, cats, perfume, candles, smoke to name a few. She also takes meds for asthma as well as her other CF meds. We all have a regular wonderful life and one of the reasons is because we are so diligent with her treatments. I do use freshners when she isn't around, however, my question was what I could do when she was with me.

One alternative I just thought of was to use an odorless air freshener. I know that when I am hospitalized the hospital provides a little bottle of odorless air freshener that doesn't seem to bother my lungs...it may be worth looking into. I'll try to get the name of it.

TO KARLA:

How about the baking soda things that you can stick on the inside of fridges/freezers. Spreading it on carpet etc would make it airborne so I dont recommend that.

TO MANDA:

I wont lecture, but let me say that until my daughter was 2 years old I was very lax in my care & non compliant. Even during my pregnancy. I dont know how much of what I did or didnt do in the past has led me to now having under 30% lung function, but I cant turn back time (breaks into a Cher song here LOL) so I will never know.

THAT being said....I think 68% PFT for your age is lousy. If you get sick & lose more you will be edging closer & closer to no return. On the other hand if you are 68% without being compliant & exposing yourself to smoke, fragrances etc.....can you imagine what your lung function could be doing the opposite.

As to not being aware of these things...that is what these sites are for. Many CFers &/or families dont think about things. I still wear perfume & burn candles, but only certain scents otherwise my airways close up. I cant use carpet fresh anymore & I have always lived with smokers, but my husband finally quite as did my Mom. I am so thankful for that because my airways couldnt tolerate it like it did when I was your age.

Yes a lot has to do with progression, but if I knew then what I know now.....I would change some things for sure.
