sore spots

I wake up, often, with really sore spots in my lungs. I always thought that they were pulled muscles, but I am starting to think that they might be mucus plugs...??? Anyone else have similar things? Ideas on how best to clear them?

Hi Christina, welcome to the group! I hope you'll find the support and encouragement you need from all of us here.

The soreness you are feeling, does it seem worse when you try to take a deep breath? Does a rescue med inhaler (such as albuterol) help? It could be that the sticky mucus is plugging something up. Do you have a Vest and do you have any neb treatments that you do right before bedtime?

When we are inactive during the night, our mucus does what's called "pooling." Basically it all gets stuck in one place, which is why we often have to do a lot of coughing first thing upon waking. If you're having trouble throughout the night, one thing that helps me is to sleep with more than one pillow propping me up. My evening CF meds include pulmozyme, hypertonic saline, Advair and Singulair, all of which have made a great improvement in my ability to sleep all night without waking myself up coughing.

Be sure to stay well hydrated too.

Hope you get some relief soon!

Lauren, you take pulmozyme and hypertonic salene BEFORE bed? Wow. That is super interesting! My doctors tell me NEVER to take it if I am going to be inactive....maybe they will change their minds once more studies have been done!

It does get worse when I take a deep breath. I don't have a vest, but I do a lot of ventolin, tobra treatments. I can't seem to tolerate TOBI for some reason. I do Pulmozyme in the morning and exercise in the morning and do physio at night....I am really thinking that they are plugs....

Thanks for the info!
