Sputum cultures

When I go to the CF clinic for the first time they will do a sputum culture. I've never had one before.

First, do you have to actually bring something up to do it? I'm not sure how it works.

Second, if your sputum is clear/white, can the culture still show bad bugs? Mine is only colored occasionally. I don't cough up very much, but enough that I can't call it a dry cough.

Just learning everything I can!

Thanks,
Sarah

well sputum cultures at cf visits are fairly standard, and if you can't get anything up they go after it in the back of your throat, so if at all possible get something up, as for what different things look what colors? i don't know annd can't really help you there

Don't worry, they'll probably show you some techniques to bring stuff up. Like the huff coughs people were talking about in your "DIY chest PT" thread.

(in a thick russian accent) They have ways of making you cough.

HAHAHAHAHAHA. My doctor wanted to take me out back behind the shed and show me how to "hawk" one up. He is a riot. And when I finally did ***at 22 yrs old*** he jumped for joy and my mom could hear him happily screaming from the waiting room! I had a bad experience the time before with the swab, so I was determined (plus I think I was kinda sick...and found to have MRSA).

I wouldnt worry too much about the color. I have heard that it means different things, but sometimes its only green in the mornings or things like that too.
