Starting a job

I was just read an article on the CFF website about this:

<a target=_blank class=ftalternatingbarlinklarge href="http://www.cff.org/UploadedFiles/LivingWithCF/InWorkplace/CFInTheWorkplace%2Epdf
">http://www.cff.org/UploadedFil...FInTheWorkplace%2Epdf
</a>
It really is a personal decision. My husband doesn't tell his employers generally and that is the way he wants to do it. Others on this board tell anyone and everyone that they have CF--so you will probably get a lot of different opinions. When it comes down to it, you will have to do what is right for you.

Good luck!

I was an elementary ed major also and I did not tell on any of my interviews. There are hundreds of teachers looking for jobs (at least in my area, Chicago) so I didn't want to start off giving them a reason not to hire me.

I found a job in a private school and I eventually told my principal because I had to go into the hospital. She was wonderful about it and in fact I went over my sick days and she didn't mind.

The only issue is that in many public schools the principals are not nearly as understanding. I was at another school that would never had accepted if I even used half as many sick days. So right now anyways, I picked the less money but more understanding school.

I wouldn't tell if I were you. Then you can get a feel of the school before you come out and say anything. Feel free to PM me if you want any more info. Good luck<img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

Hi. My name is Chrissy and I'm 30 with CF. I was diagnosed at 21 and right after that I got a job teaching preschool. My husband was worried that I would not get the job if I told them; but I did tell them and I did get it. I thought since my dr said my CF would cause me to miss work that it would be best to be up front. With my latest employer I told them at the start. The are wonderful with me and work with me in anyway that they can.
With my teaching preschool not only did I tell my supervisor but I also told my parents (my kids parents that is) I felt it was their right to know that while I cough often; that I was not contagious.
With my second employer after being diagnosed (current) I wanted to apply for FMLA as soon as I was able. So I disclosed the info while inquirering about benefits and the FMLA.

It is totally a personal choice. Depending on how you feel about your CF, and whether you think others should know or even if they need to know.

Hi Erin!

I am in the SAME exact boat as you right now! Well sorta....I finsihed school for elementary education in Dec. So far though, I have just been subbing. I know exactly how you feel about telling/not telling....esp with kids in mind.

I would prob lean towards NOT telling, at the interview that is. First of all, its not thier business and its confidential...but then you run the risk of having kids with CF in your school/class. I think that if you wait till after you have been hired you can still speak with the principal or hiring personell and tell them your concerns. IF there were any children in your class with CF and the school year has not started yet, they can move kids around. If you have an understanding boss, they should be supportive of your needs...since thats what thier job is.

Feel free to PM if you wanna chat some more! I would love to share job search stories more in depth, we prob have a lot in common.
