Strategies to combat colds

Hi folks,

just an update, and thanks for all of your lovely advice!

My cold "hit" on Tuesday. By Wednesday, I had loaded up on a cocktail of cold meds, thanks to your help:

*sudafed
*wellness pills from Whole Foods
*Echinachia
*Zinc lozanges (i had never heard of these, wow!)
*Vitamins up the wazoo
*indian food (for the "spicy food" suggestion)

I also supplemented this regimen with a couple runs at the gym, followed by going into the sauna. I felt like I would "sweat the disease" out of me. Call me superstitious, but it worked!

I was better by Friday and was able to enjoy a wonderful Halloween Weekend w. my friends! The cold never made it to my chest, so I am enjoying a great day and am no longer worried about a major chest infection. Cheers!

Congrats!!!

I am so glad you were able to kick it, and now your medicine cabinet is super-stocked for the winter :)

I had the opposite experience this weekend. On Thurs, in the span of about five hours, I went from my status quo of rumbly in the lower lobes to rusty-mucus, no-turning-back misery. I started Avelox on Friday and feel pretty decent by today, Monday. I didn't need pain killers and could stand for long periods of time again. Maybe Wednesday, I'll go to the gym? Tomorrow?

I don't know which is preferable, the sneaky, kamakazi infections or the ones that you can see coming from a mile away. I am glad you dodged the one you could see :)

So cool, Welshwitch. Zinc rocks! You are proof of zinc shortening a cold to 3 days. Next time if you take all your remedies at the first tickle, you might shorten it to a day or less. Zinc works on the cold virus, but some of the other "remedies" help in different ways -- most importantly stopping the dripping down into the chest which turns a cold into that horrible bronchitis we know so well. So happy for you.
