Swollen chest

It seems to me that us CFers seem to have biger chests. Somtimes it's really hard for me to get tops to fit due to this issue. When my mom buys me tops I get sad becuase most just do not fit right. There just so tight and pull all over. My lung doctors have told me that most people with CF do have issues with this. And then theres my belly! It's always so swollen and it just makes me feel fat. Somedays its just hard to understand that I am not fat. I have CF and my body is just made different due to it. and that I won't be able to fit nornal outfits as well as others who do not have CF. I have the same issue with my full vest system it's really hard to get it to fit right somedays becuase of my belly. I also have a curve in my back to to CF. So does anyone feel this way also?

I think the term you're looking for is a barrel chest. A lot of us have it, myself included. It does indeed suck for trying to find tops that fit. I was so happy when those hippy-type tops were in style... you know, kinda tight on top in the chest, then flare out around the tummy? I was finally able to find some shirts that fit that didn't make me look pregnant or had buttons down the front that were crying from strain.

Clothing can be a bit of an issue for us, but it doesn't have to be. For ladies especially, look for clothing that isn't made of a lot of Lycra or Spandex. Clothing that is made of "stretch cotton" is sometimes a good bet. Also, look for tops that aren't fitted across the bottom hem. V-neck tops are very flattering on most women, and draw attention away from our "kangaroo pouch" tummies. Of course, don't go too low on the V or you'll run the risk of being immodest

Even if you're a "juniors" size because of how skinny you are, avoid shopping in the Junior's department. The latests trends can be too clingy and unflattering for those of us who are barrel chested. Instead, try looking in the petites department. Those sizes run small where you need them to be (such as narrow in the shoulders and across the butt) but they allow for those bumps and bulges that the teenyboppers don't seem to have. Petites clothing sizes are designed for the more "mature" shape, just in a smaller package. Fitted blouses are very flattering, and A-line dresses with flutter sleeves are great for showing off our slim upper arms!

If you have the means, I highly recommend adding a few "essentials" to your closet; things like a good fitting (possibly deisgner) pair of jeans, nice slacks, a blouse that goes well with either slacks or jeans, and then some sort of feminine blazer with a lot of detail in the stitching can make you look and feel good.

And don't forget to buy a pair of AWESOME shoes. That's something I learned from our late friend, "littledebbie." Never skimp on great shoes!
