telling work about cf

My boyfriend just got a job teaching seventh grade and is wondering when it is appropriate to let the school know he has CF? He is very private about it and doesn't want to tell them before it is necessary, but also doesn't want to spring it on them out of nowhere if he gets sick or needs a PICC or anything. We just graduated college, so working with CF is completely new to us... any advice would be much appreciated! Thanks!

He may want to talk to HR about this - they should be able to help him out. I told my boss in private, and he is very understanding. However, I later learned that HR does not want us to tell our bosses about stuff like this, because, technically, if something happened I could sue my employer and say "my boss didn't give a promotion because I have CF" - does that make sense? HR said we should tell them, and, if our bosses have issues with us needing time off from being sick, we can go to HR, and HR will basically tell our bosses they need to lay-off <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif" border="0">

But, personally, I have an awesome boss and am glad he knows - I would feel weird taking all kinds of sick time with him not knowing why.

I always waited until I "proved" myself at the job or got hospitalized!! LOL I didn't want assumptions right off the bat. Or them think of this girl will just be sick all the time and never here....blah blah blah. So thats my reasoning for waiting. but once everyone knew it did make things alot easier. No more comments like "Geez you've had that cold forever!"....hope this helps some!

It's a tricky issue. I think that it should come up if there is a real reason to tell them, ie, you anticipate a hospital stay or a PICC line or something that that will be an obvious distraction. On the other hand, I taugh high school for a couple years and didn't feel a need to say anything, so I didn't. My current job I told my boss, but in retrospect I'm not sure it was really that necessary beacuse I don't miss work any more often than anyone else. On the other hand, it's nice to know she "has my back" in the event that I DO have to go into the hospital or have some other health issues!
