The Kindergarten Conundrum

When in doubt and I just really can't decide on something, I go with my original thought on the subject before my mind was clouded with relative's opinions and such. Sort of my 1st gut instinct.Does your school have the Kindergarten screening day - our's is called Kindergarten Roundup? All the people thinking about putting their kids in Kindergarten take the kids there and they play and talk to some of the teachers etc and then the teachers let you know their opinion on whether your kiddo is ready or not and what you might need to do over the summer to get them ready.

Yes, we had it the middle of March. Basically visited with teachers, principal and we were given a packet on kindergarten readiness -- can your child count to 100, know letter, working with them using the d'nealean handwriting style... My gut feeling jitters at the time had more to do with the rush for the school district to switch to all day kindergarten. But figured as with any milestone -- first daycare field trip, gymnastics, first day of baseball, swimming lesson -- I'd adjust. And heck, I had all day kindergarten over 30 years ago and I survived

Neither DH or I considered keeping him back an option because neither of us were raised that way. But both of us had a couple concerns, which we thought would either decrease with time or we'd get an answer -- that somehow over the summer months we'd just know...

Hi Liza, Francis went ahead and did the K'garten last year after his June bday, turning 5. Half-day. They're starting full-day here this year-- glad he didn't get it! He's not too small and is academically gifted, so holding him back wasn't a big consideration. His pre-school teachers said his social skills were fine. Biggest draw for him was that he already knew a lot of the other kids going in. Whichever way you go will be fine: there will be the positives and the negatives, but I would advise WAIT! Boys especially LOVE to be biggest, oldest, etc, and the summer bday socialization advice is generally to wait. As you already know. Unless he'd be bored out of his skull, give him the bigger and older advantage, I'd say. Good luck!
