I started going to the gym monday. I walk one mile on the treadmill in 20:43. Then I ran 2 laps around the track, I didn't make the laps all the way around though w/o stopping. Well today I went and I walk one mile (treadmill) in 18:16 and I ran 2 laps but I did it w/o stopping. I was quite proud of myself for going in the 1st palce but the improvement really motivated me.

Well to the question, I was planning on adding in weights and maybe some pool laps soon but I want to integrate that slowly so as not to get discouraged. For those of you that exercise what things have you done that have helped to improve lungs function and have over all made you feel better???

Thanx

I have been exercising vigorously for 8 years. Everything you do helps open the airways and gets rid of the mucus.

I flat bench, incline, dips. Shoulders, traps, biceps, triceps, back, and legs. I run 6 miles on the treadmill twice a week.

They all increase my heart rate and open the airways to cough up the mucus.

Do not get discouraged, once you get through a couple months it will be harder for you not to do it.

I walk a mile on the treadmill at least 5X a week, although it takes me approx. 30 minutes<img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-confused.gif" border="0"> I am going to increase my speed, though, since I feel like my body is used to walking now. So I'll be catching up to ya, buddy!! LOL

I can tell that I feel better all around with exercise. My last PFT showed a 5% FEV1 improvement. I do need to add that I dropped taking e-mycin & added Zithromax around the same time that I started walking, so the Zithro may have helped with the improvement too.

Keep it up! That's great<img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

Good for you for exercising! I have seen the most marked improvement when I added exercise in my FEV1... nothing else brought it up, but exercise did and continues to keep it at a higher baseline than before I exercised!

I always try to push myself and walk faster or run faster or longer or at an incline whenever I am able. I go until I can barely hold a conversation, which is generally considered maximum for people. I make sure to warm up and cool down 3-5 minutes each time I'm on the treadmill.

I also noticed that I rarely cough with cardio, but ALWAYS cough when doing weights.... Its cause of how I breath. I feel I do almost a "huff" cough everytime I exhale and extend the weights. So, I almost always cough lots up after each set of weights. When doing weights, you're also breathing more from your diaphram, which sometimes I don't do when I run since I'm not able to take a full breath in and out all the time.

So, best of luck to you! You should be commended, as should all CFers who decide to use exercise as a GREAT tool for increasing lung volumes and function! YAY exercise!!!

i found for me, using an eliptical machine works pretty good cause it's like jogging but no impact on the knees. also if you could play basketball or an exercise like that, that really helps the lung cause of the stop and go.

when i was younger my lungs were in great shape from playing basketball all day every day.

Glad to hear you're exercising!!!

My recommendation to you would be this: set some specific short and longer term goals for yourself to keep your self motivated. They don't have to be large... increasing your walk by a few minutes each week, running two laps instead of one, etc. might be good examples of short term goals. A longer term goal might be running a mile, finishing a 5k, on up. Obviously they don't have to be running specific, these are just examples. Tailor them to what you think is reasonable, but don't be afraid to push yourself. Of course, you can start of small and keep increasing your goals as you attain them.

Keep up the good work!
