As for the whole topic... I'm sort of neutral on it. I understand why people would choose not to have a fetus with CF, but I understand why people would continue a pregnancy too.

yep thats messed up. you shouldnt pick and choose which kids you will have. leave that to God. i mean you could have a healthy baby and later it could get cancer.
thank God my mom didnt ABORT me</end quote></div>
However... leaving anything to a god assumes that you believe in one. And not everybody does.

For me I think it is better to have pgd done (correct me if this isnt where they look at the embryos BEFORE implantation) or don't have kids at all than abortion. With abortion, in my eyes, you could get pregnant loads of times and keep striking them off until you get the non cfer and to me that's not reponsible.

i know i would never want my child to have to live with this disease that i have to deal with. i would do everything in my power to make sure that my child has a normal life. it's not about perfection. it's about quality of life.

The fact that we now have the ability to "play god" and use it...scares me.

<img src=""></end quote></div>

We've been "playing god" for a long time now. 50 years ago, I wouldn't have made it to kindergarten. I think it's interesting that we only consider it playing god when decisions are made that affect quantity (not quality) of life.

This is obviously a very polarized issue, and my own views are very strong. I only ask that when you pick a side, make sure you make an extremely well informed decision.

Playing God has to do with being able to genetically pre-select certain traits before a person is even born. Treating and curing diseases is nowhere near the same thing.

I disagree. Pre-selecting for certain traits is closer to ethnic cleansing, which is usually one of the things that people are afraid of, along with loss of genetic diversity.

Playing god presumably would be anything that would alter the lifespan of someone and screw up "god's timing." Out of that arose the opposition to suicide, because it was taking control of your own lifespan and ending it early. It seems that most people have more of a problem with life being ended unnaturally (or screened out) rather than extended unnaturally.

Maybe we should make a poll. I'm interested to know how many people would oppose genetic screening and pre-selection, yet approve of genetic therapy (should it turn out to be possible). Is there much of a difference, scientifically, correcting a defective gene or making sure that particular mutation doesn't occur in the first place?
