By the way, I think limiting your dreams because of CF is phooey. Even if you can only live your dream for a short time is totally worth it. You just have to play with the cards you are dealt AT THAT TIME, another round of cards is coming in the future and who knows if they will be better or worse than right now. Don't assume you are going to be sick in the future. There is no way to tell your future. You may get really sick in a year, or you may get really sick in 20 years, so live your dreams to their fullest while you can!</end quote>

I agree 1110%! NEVER let CF stop you from dreaming and from dreaming BIG! You don't know when you will need to stop working and you don't want to be working at some halfway decent job for 15 years WISHING you had gone to school for your dream career. Do it!!!

I agree that you need to do what you can until you can't do it anymore. Sure, someday you may need a desk job, but until that time comes you should do everything that you can. I'm sure you've considered this, but you may need to take extra precautions that a "healthy" vet might not take. For example, you might need to wear gloves and a mask more often than a "healthy" vet might need to. You'll be exposing yourself to many more bugs than a CFer with a desk job would, but if that's your passion then you should pursue it. You might also need to have the vet equivalent of an orderly around to help you with the larger animals, but I'm sure there are many vets that need that.

Anyway, best of luck! I'm excited for you!

I know its difficuult but i think you have to live for today. My motto is live every day as if its your last. Sometimes i know its tough to think like that. Yes you could pick up bugs etc but you could also get mowed down by a bus tomorrow. Noone knows whats around the next corner but if you want to be a vet then go do it. If you don't you'll never know how much you can handle and you'll only regret not giving it a go. If things get too much then think about a career change later.

I think most bosses don't understand what CF entails . I know mine make me do stuff ie i was cleaning out old files full of dust and it wasn't till i coughed up blood they realised it wasn't good for me to do this. Now they are much more lenient when it comes to physical tasks. i should have stuck up for myself and refused to do it to start with, but i find that tough to do.

don't let this get the better of you Lots of HUGGSSSSSXXXX

Hi everybody. I just wanted to say THANKS so much for all your wonderful concern. I don't like 'whining' but I know we all go through our downs from time to time. I think the hard thing for me is that I could NEVER work a desk job, unless I absolutely had too. I am too hands-on, and I just like helping people (and animals) directly.

And I loved your advice, Darby:
"For example, you might need to wear gloves and a mask more often than a "healthy" vet might need to. I totally agree. I was talking to my biochem professor (she is totally in love with me and is interested in my CF- she even put a question about VX-770 on our last exam lol) and she suggested I get a good filtration system for my clinic. That seems like a really good idea to me. I usually wear a mask during surgeries, etc- we have a laser that puts all sorts of gross stuff in the air- and wash my hands A LOT. I haven't worn masks during sweeping for some stupid reason- I wore them at my old job...I should start doing that.

I most likely won't do large animal stuff...I am just too tiny and too sympathic as well. Ah well.

Anyhow, hugs all around and I'll see how much I cheer up after my ABx...I think being tired all the time (no doubt my blood sugar contributes) is just killing me. I'll have to consider a pump...I just take such stupidly small amounts of insulin I'm deciding if it's worth it or not.

So many life decisions to make!
