Treadmill vs. Outside Running

I have been running off and on for about a year. Honestly, I don't like running. I would much rather do X-biking,spinning or kick boxing. I know it's good to change things up every once in a while though to keep your body guessing. Recently it's become a goal to run farther because the doctors seem to care about that more.

I am currently able to run 3 miles on the treadmill at about a 13 mile pace. I pushed the other day was able to run a mile in 10 minutes. Outside, however, I am lucky to run a 1/4 of mile w/out absolutely dying. In Lubbock,TX our outside elements aren't always the best. Wind!!!

Is running outside difficult for anyone else? Is running on a treadmill just easier? I would like to run a marathon someday but it seems almost impossible to train outside where I live. Any suggestions?

I used to love the treadmill and hate outside running; now I'm the exact opposite. <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

I live in Houston, so it's EXTREMELY hot & humid, and makes running outside difficult, but I get really bored on the treadmill.

I would defintely recommend a marathon if it's something you want to do! I had never in my life run more than 3 miles when I started training for my 1st half marathon; since they I've done a lot of half marathons and am training for my 2nd full marathon. It's so much fun, and you meet so many neat people during the race

I know weather in TX pretty much sucks for running outdoors, but I wake up really early on Saturdays (5-6am) for my long runs to beat the heat.

You must be in great health!

I have been running all of my life and I am in decent health, however each time I start training again I end up getting sick and taking a week or two off.

I tried to train for a marathon last year but kept getting sick and then would spend all my time trying to get back in shape and then get sick again.

I am once again training for a half and had to take ten days off (hopefully I will run tomorrow). How do you manage training and getting sick?

I ran XC in high school and inside is far easier IMHO. Air conditioning, padded running, constant to slight variation in inclination, no wind. But outside is so much more fun!
