Okay, it's saturday, midnight, and I'm stressing out about my hearing right now. Even if someone is a few feet from me, I can't necessarily hear them. It's gotten really bad in the past 3 days! I feel like I need to stop all my MAC meds tomorrow (Sun) until I talk to my doc on Monday. But I don't know if I should do that or not.

Help....would you guys stop everything if you felt worried about one of your meds causing serious hearing loss? I'm on 2-3 meds that are causing this and it's gotten to the point that I can't handle it anymore (as of right now) and I'm really stressed out. I hope this loss is temporary like it was before and comes back with steroids or something. This is not cool. This is the first time I feel scared about the deafness and ringing.

I'm being so compliant and good with all these different drugs, but this is where I draw line. It just sucks that tomorrow is Sunday!! I guess stopping everything one day until I talk to someone isn't that bad, right?

I'm so sorry! <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-sad.gif" border="0"> I've been having problems with this too, I have a hearing test scheduled soon. Yours sounds a lot more severe than mine though.

MAC is Mycobacterium avium complex right? (I googled it to check, not sure) I honestly looked up a lot about hearing loss and antibiotics before replying to this... I discovered that most hearing loss is irreversible (but then again I'm not sure what medicines you're on) so I would definitely stop your meds for a day or until you talk to your doctor. In the long run, one day of meds is not going to make or break you. Even if it does result in you getting sicker, I would say saving your hearing is worth it. Hopefully they can find another drug to put you on, or adjust the dose, or have some other advice to give.

Again, this is all my opinion, but my hearing is very important to me. I mean, I know it's important to everyone, but like you, it's where I draw the line.

Hmm, on second thought, can you page your doctor? I mean I *would* wait a day like I said, but perhaps you can talk to him tomorrow and avoid having to make that choice? I hope you can talk to him soon, tell us what happens.

I agree with Sevenstars, try to have your Dr. paged and go from there. I had hearing problems with iv Tobramycin, luckily when i got off of the Tobramycin my hearing slowly came back. I dont know anything about MAC or what you would be on, but before you decide to stop taking the medicine try getting in touch with your Dr. If you cant seem to reach him or her, than if it really concerns you which it sounds like it does, i would skip the doses till i talk to the Dr. and see if there are alternatives.

I agree with others that you should have your doctor paged. Check the fact sheets that you get from the pharmacy and see if hearing loss is a documented side effect of the drugs that you're currently taking. If your MAC is being treated like mine was i had 3 meds - rifampin, azithromycin and ethambutol - for 18 months. That way if you need to stop a drug, you can stop the 1 likely culprit and keep on the others. Good luck! ~Juliet
