Ashley,

The test does not hurt, just might be annoying to your little one. They will wipe down their arms, apply a few drops of something to induce good sweating, sometimes they wrap it up to wait a bit on sweating, other times not. Then they will apply a sticky patch that will collect the sweat, wrap up the area and normally wait about 30 minutes. They will unwrap it, collect the sweat in a very tiny tube(right off the skin) and your done. We were able to call clinic 2 days after and they had the results. Good luck to you!

Yes, as Jada has said ...it's a painless process... it might be just a little bit different - some places use pads instead of tubes, but all in all they are basically the same... clean the skin with a wipe, place a pad type thing on the skin, wrap it with saran wrap and have you sit and wait.... one of the tests on my daughter they had her put her arm into her winter coat because of the air conditioning.

Getting the results can vary -- anything from a couple of hours to several days... be sure to ask your doctor ahead of time what the time frame and notification will be...you can specify that you want to be called on the phone if possible -- it just depends on what your doctor is comfortable with doing....be sure to ask if he/she will be in the office and/or available to notify you that day.... you don't want them to promise to call you and then find out they have the day off or something.

Be sure to ask what the number is -- do not just accept "negative" if that's what they say. Anything borderline or positive will be positive.

Sounds like you are making the right call with your husbands new shift.... you can do this test and drive by yourself... it'll be ok. :) on second thought, if you are really worried about it, do you have someone else to go with you? A friend, relative or in-law?

Best of luck... please keep us up to date!

I just wanted to say that I had to take my daughter to the doctor again yesterday. We go about once or twice a week usualy. Her doctor is really good at seeing her on last minute and even had me come in after hours yesterday. Anyways she said that her lungs sound really congested and that we need to do the breathing treatments every 4hrs all day and night along with the daily one she always gets. She just got off of antibiotics and breathing treatment every 6hrs a few days ago for travelers diareah, ear infection, uti and a cough that they said was asthma (this was at a walk in clinic because it was a sunday when I took her in).

She does not get fevers though. I was wondering if anyone else has any experience with this? Her doctor said that it was because I nurse her but she was extreamly mis-diagnosed at a hospital in texas ( we are from michigan) all because she didnt have a fever. We were traveling and our plane was canceled due to snow and she just kept getting worse with her cough and breathing and we were taken by ambulance to a local hospital in houston where they first told me the wait was going to be 10 to 16hrs. Where we live if you have to go by ambulance to the hospital they dont make you wait. Anyways she would not stop crying, which is not like her at all. The receptionist finaly told the nurse that she needed to be seen right away. This is after about 5hrs of waiting with her and my 4yr old son after we had been traveling 15hrs already with no sleep. The doctor then told me, like I was stupid, that sometimes babies get colds like adults do and that she just had a cold and that her lungs sound fine and her skin wasnt tugging when she was breathing and she wasnt wheezing. When I asked them to give her something for pain they wouldent. They said that they dont treat for pain and unless she had a fever they wouldent give her anything. My poor baby had been screeming for 5hrs straight without stopping to nurse or sleep. I did not leave the hospital. I knew that there was something wrong with my baby. After she finaly fell asleep you could see that her neck sunk in really deep when she was breathing. The nurse was not in the exam room and I took her right back on my own with no permisson and hooked her up to the pulse ox. It was in the 80's. The lab tec went back to get the doctor and when he came back he did not belive us that her oxygen was low but me, the lab tec, and the receptionist were all telling him how sick she really was and he finaly took her back and drew blood did a cath (which took 2 nurses 3kits and about 8 times to get it in) and put her on oxygen. The same doc then came back and told me that the same baby he seen an hr ago that only had a cold now has Pharengitis, an upper respitory infection, and a uti. He said that he didnt think she was sick because she didnt have a fever. Even though I repetidly told him that she does not get fevers. Then he gave her a shot of antibiotics and sent me back to the airport. I called her doctor on the way home from the airport and took her straight there. Her oxygen was still in the 80's after 2 breathing treatments and her doctor said that if I couldent get a ride to the hospital in 5 min that she was going to call an ambulance and she should have never been released in texas. She ended up being hospitalized for 5 days on oxygen. We went through all that all because she didnt have a fever (and the fact that the doctor in texas was totaly incompatent and should have his licence revoked)!

I don't know that I could make a blanket statement of never getting fevers, because my kids definitely have run fevers for several reasons over the years. But I can say that usually with a lung infection they do not run a fever.... I do tend to think that is the case with most people with CF...anyone else??? Am I correct?
