Disney and Epcot are nice, interesting is a trip to Tijuana/Mexico, the Highway 1 up to San Francisco is beautiful and from San Diego its only some hours to Las Vegas
Oh and San Diego is the only american city I got to know until now where you can get completely lost

San Diego and San Francisco (take a train). LA is good for Disneyland but other than that it's over rated.

Editing: also my opinion, I agree on skipping the Hollywood scene, not worth the hassle. And Universal Studios isn't that intersting. I would go to the SD Zoo instead of the Sea World and skip the Safari thing because when it's hot, and it will be in Sept, the animals hide in the shade so basically you drive around and all you can see is their habitat but the animals are out of sight. Nice. I would get a passport and do Tijuana instead. Totally touristy and all, but still a fun and unique experience, a definite memory.

And San Fran is amazing, the wharf, museums, SHOPPING, Alcatraz and the bridges and the streets and the houses...really you should try to work it in. And hop a trolly

I would deff go and do the tour at Alcatraz, its so neat!!! The warfs in San Fran are amazing and you have to go to the street, I cant remember the name off the top of my head, I will. Its the windest road in the US. Its really neat! I dont know if you have a car that you will be able to drive out of the state with or not but if you are into nature at all and you have the time ( and the fire in some areas has settled and gone) driving to lake tahoe and yosimite national park is a must. It is the most beautiful place. Breath taking views, the lake is amazing and the waterfalls that you will see at the national park will blow you away.
