Vitamin D and lung health

Alyssa's Vit D just came back low, too, even with the SourceCF doses. So we just put her on a D3 supplement as well. Interesting to hear that this seems common.

What about Source Cf? Its bad? I read about adeks and aquadeks. There are very expensive. In fact, they have the same. I dont know the others their cost are expensive.I just found a vitamin d that has 400 UI in my country.

I take 4000IU of Vit D per day....I try to break it up to 2000 at lunch and 2000 at dinner-but it doesn't always happen. My Vit D was always low until I started doing this last year-now it is normal!!

Plus I read last year that it really helps your respiratory health and immune system-figured it couldn't hurt!

My CF center checks all of my levels each year.

I have read from numerous sources and also was told by the dietitian at my clinic that you can only absorb 500mg of calcium at a time. So anything over 500mg in a single dose goes unused.

My advice is to get separate vit d and calcium sources and break up your doses throughout the day. I take a 5000 iu vit d pill each day (like you I had very low levels) and 2 500 mg calcium pills per day (1 early, 1 late - and the calcium has a bit of vit D in it as well). I would also add magnesium as they all work together.

Hope you can get your levels raised!

At one point when I was 17 I had no detectable immune system and the doctors had to "rebuild" it with shots. Then when I was 18 and was diagnosed with RA they ran all kinds of blood work and found no detectable trace of vitamin D. I'm not sure if the two are connected...? But it took me a year or two to get my vitamin D levels built up and kept at a normal range. I don't know if CF doctors check vitamin D levels every year because I was diagnosed with RA first and they did it every 3 months then every 6 months so my CF doctor doesn't normally bother with blood tests.
