I have read from numerous sources and also was told by the dietitian at my clinic that you can only absorb 500mg of calcium at a time. So anything over 500mg in a single dose goes unused.
My advice is to get separate vit d and calcium sources and break up your doses throughout the day. I take a 5000 iu vit d pill each day (like you I had very low levels) and 2 500 mg calcium pills per day (1 early, 1 late - and the calcium has a bit of vit D in it as well). I would also add magnesium as they all work together.
