Vitamin D and lung health

A simple blood test can detect your Vitamin D levels.

I am sure you have read that a lack of vitamin D is linked to various diseases.

Be sure to check out different brands of vitamin D. Not all are effective. I really love Biotics Research Vitamin D Emulsion.

You do not want to be too low or too high with your blood levels. Mine is currently at 68.

"Like with non-CF individuals, the 25 hydroxyvitamin D (25OHD) level determines the degree of vitamin D insufficiency and, following data published outside CF, a 25OHD level 75?nmol/L (30?ng/mL) is considered insufficient. All CF patients should have vitamin D levels checked annually, ideally by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) mass spectrometry test. Serum concentrations of 1 - 25 dihydroxyvitamin D have little impact on the management of vitamin D problems in CF. These levels are often normal or elevated in the setting of vitamin D deficiency due to increased activity of renal 1-hydroxylase under the influence of elevated PTH [8]. As in the general population, serum 25OHD levels may display variability based on the time of year and latitude and should be checked in late fall or winter to determine the degree of deficiency. "

I don't know off the top of my head what Emily's numbers were, but she was deficient in VitD as well as calcium not last time, but the time before. We added a Vitamin D3 supplement and both the D and calcium came up next time they were checked.

Enough vitamin D is important for having good immune function, good to keep in mind this time of year.

All of her levels are checked yearly.

DS doctor did mention at the last appointment that the last Vitamin D levels were pretty good. Out of curiousity I'd just looked at the Source CF vitamins a few weeks prior as our doctors have told us (DH and myself) that we should be taking 2000 iu per day. The Source CF ones have 1,000 iu and DS takes them twice a day, plus he gets some additional with his milk and CIB. Hopefully he'll continue to do okay.

Good post! I was very deficient in Vit D after I had my daughter - enough to warrant an official letter from my clinic. It kind of came out of nowhere. I now take 5000 iu everyday. I have the order to get my labs done but haven't done it yet. I will be very surprised if it is low still. I give my kids and husband vit D too. The kids love the vit D drops that I got. It has 400iu in every drop. They also sell a drop with 1000 iu in each drop. I give the kids a squirt of it (not just a drop).

i believe increased vitamin d supplementation is becoming a standard in cf care. last year my dd's vitamin d levels were fine but her cf doc started her on 20ml vitamin d3 as an additional daily supplement.

I would think checking vitamin levels is a standard for every CFer once a year?

At least A, D and E. Don't know if they check K with a level or adjust that to how thick your blood is or not. But I think all fat soluble vitamins should be checked every year.
