Hi Khristina

I'm a 54 year old female w/cf. I have 4 sons, ages 31,28,16
&13. I also have a grandson who just turned one. I
didn't know that i had c/f until i was diagnosed at the age of 44.
So in answer to your question, yes you can definitely become
pregnant.
HI, you mentioned that you and your doctor worked to get your PFT's up? Can you tell us what specifically you did? I was in the 98% up until a year ago and had a major infection that led to my first IV antibiotics. Unfortunately, I am stuck around 65% and have been trying to regain to where I was but no luck so far. I'm taking Pulmozyme, Saline, doing chest PT and now they want to try me on inhaled TOBI. Your insights would help.

Thank you,
Jen

I guess this question was directed at everyone, so I'll tell ya what happened with me.
I think the biggest thing that helped me was learning a new chest pt technique. This new way of doing therapies has helped me cough up on average 1/4 cup of mucus with every therapy. I have to force myself to cough it up, and yes it is exhausting. However, my pfts went from and fev1 of roughly 45% to 75% in 1.5 years. I had been at 45% for 4-5 years, so this was a huge jump for me. I don't know how you are with your therapies, how compliant-I know its hard. But therapies have to count. Each on is an opportunity for you to get mucus up. And it doesn't come on its own for most people-you have to force it out.

I have also been on TOBI and Pulmozyme for many years. I started on hypertonic saline 1 year ago, and I think that has contributed hugely to my improvement. Also my doc started me on oral Zithromax, and I've been on that 1.5 years, so I dont' know if that has improved me for sure, but I've done well on it so it probably helped.

I also take alot of herbal/natural supplements. The basics are flax seed oil, a good multi vitamin, protein shakes, some immune boosting herbs to name just a few, and over all a healthy diet. No fast food, or overprocessed food. My mental state of mind has had to do just as much with my success as all my treatments and meds, too I think. My determination to reach my goal, which was 75-and thats exactly what I reached and held it. Mental attitude palys a huge role. Having a goal helps, for me it was to be able to get my doc's approval to be pregnant. And within a year, I reached it.

Something else my doc did, which I dont' think would be reccomended for everyone, but for me it was-She wanted to make sure I could sustain my high pfts for an extended period of time without some of my meds, before I was pregnant, to really see my tolerance and how I would do in a pregnant situation. Some meds, which my doctor and I agreed that I wouldn't want to be on were, TOBI, IV meds, and Advair. Again, not everyone agrees that these are dangerous, but this is what my doc reccomended for me personally. For me, I'm very glad that I had that test period to see if I could go without meds, b/c it gave me more confidence that I didn't need them and I wouldn't get sick during pregnancy. Anyway, I got my pfts up to the 70s, and then held them without those drugs for about 8 months. Then my doc and I agreed that with that knowledge in our pockets (that I could be ok without tons of meds) we could go ahead with the pregnancy.

So thats what I did, I hope it helps a little. Everyone's different and what works for one may not work for another, but this is what worked for me. If you want any further details, please feel free to ask.

Thank you so much for your insight. I was lucky to be born with a mild case of CF and up until last year just only had to maintain a healthy diet and exercise. It unfortunately caught up to me. But, I have determination to get back to where I was. I 100% believe that besides physically doing everything possible that you mentally have to be there too. I'm not going to let this stop me.

I eat a very healthy diet, no fast food at all. Ok, maybe a pizza every now and then. I was also started on Zithromax back in April and did notice a difference within a couple months. I went from only able to run 4 mins on the treadmill to 12-15 before I had to take a break. I've noticed the combo of Pulmozyme and Saline has really helped with my airway clearance. I started the Saline a month ago. I also use the Vest while doing inhaled treatments and then do Huff coughs. Those are exhausting but really help.

Again, thank you for your insights you've shown it can be done. This past year has really changed my life but I'm not letting it stop me from doing everything I love. You make adjustments and move on. Congrats on your pregnancy, I hope everything goes well for you.
